  • Sometimes it doesn't pay to take the nice car out of the garage...

My "toy" is a 2003 Ford Mustang Mach 1, Dark Shadow Grey. The Mach was brought back by Team Mustang for the 2003 and 2004 production years and they were limited runs each time. In that respect, they are somewhat rare and it seems that every day there are less of them on the road due to collisions, etc.

Today it's exceptionally pretty outside in Nashville -- crystal clear skies, temperatures in the low 70's -- so I decided that my wife and I would take the Mach to work and leave the daily drivers at home. It's a perfect day for it.

Unfortunately however while parking at lunch in a very crowded lot between two buildings, I managed to scrape the paint off the front bumper.

As best as I can figure, the front wheel had come to rest teetering on the edge of a drain culvert when we parked, and as soon as I let my foot off of the foot-brake and went to pull the parking brake handle, the wheel rolled forward into the culvert and the nose of the car banged into a cinder block wall on the other side.

Now I have an approximately 6-inch square section of bumper where the paint is torn and tattered.

I was hoping to take both the front and rear bumpers off of the car soon and have them repainted to address various rock chips and scuffs that the car has accumulated over the past three years, but this just accelerates my plan I guess.

Tungsten....that does hurt! I avoid parking lots at all costs when I've got a "toy" car out.

Hey, Totoland. I see another Mach1Registry guy found his way to Megs.

I hate it when stuff like that happens, I did the same thing to my 88 GT except I drifted into a curb while parking. My 03 Mach 1 is also going to a paint shop very soon, clear coat failure on the deck lid and rear bumper. Oh well thank goodness for insurance.

I had a kid on a bike hit the side of my car while i watched him do it..he put 2 small dings and a small scratch on my passenger quater panel...iam in the process of finding a PDR and having the scratch fixed as well. I got quoted 800 + from some body shops around here.He just happened to be from a poor family so now i gotta save up and try to get it fixed.
Nice Mach by the way Tungsten........

Thanks for the kind words folks. I had to just walk away from the situation when it happened or I would have totally lost my cool over it, but last night I took a closer look at the damage and it's not as horrible as I first thought.

The bumper definitely needs to be repainted but a lot of what I saw on the bumper initially was cement dust from the block wall. That brushed off easily and what was left behind looks like a dozen or so rock chips. The few minor scratches that are there can be worked out easily with some M83 or similar product.

I'm going to go ahead and try to get a local body shop that I've used before to take the front and rear bumper covers in and re-shoot them the same color. Hopefully it won't be too expensive if I bring the pieces to them off of the car and reassemble it myself. At least this way they won't have to factor 1-2hrs of the labor into the cost.

It'll look as good as new once it's back.
