  • Food, Fun and the Open Road

In light of our recent discussion about allowing food in cars it's timely that Food Network (foodnetwork.com) is showing Feasting on Asphalt, Alton Brown's** new four part series about eating on the road. (They started last Saturday but they'll be showing the first episode along with the second this Saturday.)

In Feasting on Asphalt Alton has a map, a motorcycle and a month to eat his way from the Atlantic coast in South Carolina to the Pacific coast in California.

I really like the show's "road trip" approach, playing it by ear, talking with locals, following leads and taking whatever detour sounds tasty and/or interesting.

Instead of following a planned itinerary they follow their "four rules" which, I think, would be great for any excursion:

    1. We will keep to back roads, steering clear of interstates.

    2. We will avoid national chain restaurants.

    3. There will be No Whining.

    4. If we can't find food we will camp and cook for ourselves or rely on the hospitality of others.

Look for episode 1, The South Shall Fry Again (8:00 PM ET/PT), and episode 2, I Smell Pork (9:00 PM ET/PT), this Saturday. (Or, check their website for other air times.)

    PC.

**For those of you who haven't seen Alton Brown's cooking show, Good Eats, IMHO it's far and away the best food show in the universe. It's entertaining (even if you don't cook), funny, educational and yes, there's lots of good cooking.
