Well, I guess I’m odd man out. (Ain’t the first time!)

I enjoy eating in my car. I enjoy living in my car. Many of the best times of my life were on the road. From watching the sun rise over the Rockies from I70 in Colorado or set over the Pacific from Hwy 1 in Big Sur to cruising Lombard Street in San Francisco, the Autobahn in Bavaria or the singletrack roads of the Scottish Highlands it’s been a blast. I’ve been known to eat, drink, sleep and um,.. well, let’s just leave it at that, in cars.

I’m not talking about having a pack of Cub Scouts slurping Popcicles. The guys I used to road trip with respected cars as much as I do and the ladies in my life have certainly been tidy. There was never that much of mess to clean up. (I eat in my house too but you won’t find French Fries under my sofa.)

It was one of our inside jokes that you knew you were on a good road trip when your dashboard looked like Garey Busey’s Camaro in The Gumball Rally. (And if you haven’t seen The Gumball Rally go rent it, or come over to my house and watch it, it’s one of the best car-guy movies ever.)

      Well said!!

I have traveled all over the US, not to mention back and forth from east coast to west a few times.

Yes we eat in our cars. If someone makes a mess I happen to know a pretty good auto detailer than can take care of it!

..."Yes, i don't allow opened drinks either. I will make the occasional exception to that rule if I know the person is responsible. However, I know some people who are just downright rude or stupid and will probably spill if I let them bring a drink in."

....I second this quote! And as for food, NO WAY! Plus, I worked as a teen at McDonald's and have never gotten over the smell!

I guess I have to agree with PC and Joe, if I didnt eat in my car, I'd have some very hungry and thirsty road trips.

Granted, no one will be eating a sloppy joe in my car, but secure drink bottles and basic food (with napkins) is pretty ok.

One thing I noticed, do you guys really get that much of a scent lingering from take-out food? Maybe my nose isnt working right or something, or maybe I live close enough to the places, but nothing ever seems to linger long.

On a more amusing note, my buddy decided to let his girlfriend at the time have a bag of potato chips in his car. Less than a minute after he said that, there was a large pile of potato chips and bits on the floor of his car when the bagged popped in her hand while opening it.

The only time I ever noticed a lingering smell(not in my car) was when someone sat a greasy bottomed bag on a seat.

I do not allow food eating in my Stang. Closable drinks are ok-we take long drives and in a vert in the hot sun it would **** with nothing to drink.

Eating/drinking is allowed in the DD-we are on the go too much not to...and we do plan on driving across the country with the 73 eventually, so eating will be ok in that car too....

Man, you made my day with that comment. (Doesn't take much, but it's been a frustrating day.) I'm picky but sometimes you have to transport food and there's nothing you can do about it. The car will air out even with the windows closed as long as you don't stuff the wrappers under the seats.

I'm with Murr, PC and Joe and all that eat in their car. I love my car. But if I'm going to the length of not eating in it, then I may as well not drive it either. No more stone chips to worry about, no more paranoia about parking in carparks, around trees etc.

We have floor mats. Granted, theyre carpet, but they're removable which makes deep cleaning a breeze. So far no ones made a mess, and I have a deodorant/fragrance thingy in my ashtray that clears out smells pretty quickly. Generally at fast food joints everyone thats riding undertands the rules: sauces stay inside the bag, no burgers open, but nuggets and chips etc are ok. No open drinks and no ice cream. If you're sensible about it, then I doubt you'd have any major problems.

Funny you mention that. A couple months ago My Jeep was broken into and my system (subs, amp, deck, wires) were stolen... and they also too my floor mats?!?! Since then I've not found any replacements, nor will I pay the dealer their stupid markup, so I'm stuck with some Ghetto-Fabbed MDF floor mats hehe

Well, for what its worth, I got some great Rubbermaid floormats at Target in the fall, and I think they still carry them.

One of the best $22 I've spent, they were great in the winter. And they look fine, so I just leave them in all the time.

If you're going to go rubber, you could always do a custom job and make dished mats. Subaru sell dished (carpet) mats as an accessory for a ridiculous price, so I've made a spare set of dished (rubber) mats from sheets off Clark Rubber.

We made the mold from MDF and then heated the sheet with an iron and pressed it into the mold for a day. Ghetto all the way

I'm not worried about spills as much as I'm worried about odors. In my experience, fast food odors tend to stick around, even when you roll the windows down. I just don't like getting into a stinky interior. I've had my car for almost four months and 5500 miles and people still tell me it smells new.

Oh my gosh.... NO FOOD.... for any reason. I was going to carpool for a couple of weeks with two other people to a class we all had. While deciding what days to drive, I mentioned that no food, coffee, etc was allowed in my car. They got mad. Argued with me....etc.

I finally just paid $30 and they did all the driving. Fine by me. I didn't want their dirty feet, greasy hands, and perfumed bodies dirtying up and smelling up my car anyways.

Has anyone noticed that some folks (especially heavily perfumed females) leave their personal scent in your car long after they're gone?

                                (I'm not a woman-hater... I'm female myself.)
