  • "Overhaulin'"... meh.

I dunno, I've watched a few episodes of this now, and although I think the concept is kinda cute, I don't really like the show.

I mean, when it comes down to it, all of Chip Foose's cars look the same; he takes these classic '60s muscle cars and pimps them up with dubs and stereos and modern bits. When he's done the car looks like the worst of both eras.

And the ending where the owner revels in the new car always feels so forced. It's like too over the top, man I love my car too but it's just a car! It's not eternal happiness, it's a thing! And now you have the added responsibility of upkeep on something that is 100% different from whatever the place you're used to going has seen....

And sometimes the pranking goes waaaay over the edge, like a show where they tell the car's owner that his girlfriend (who set up the prank) had admitted to being part of a drug ring that got his car stolen; you could see that the guy was about to throw his hands up in the air over her. It was just a little too cruel, IMO.

I think the first season was ok, but it keeps feeling more and more forced the longer they do it.

I'd still much rather this than that "other" old hot rod builder's show where everybody is always yelling at each other and they all look like a bunch of bumbling idiots. Seriously, if I had to pick a group of people to work on my car, it would be Foose's gang.

In the end though, I'll just keep downloading Top Gear shows on the Internet every week!

I think you have Overhaulin' confused with MTV's "Pimp my Ride"

Naw, There were like 3 or 4 in a row on this aft., it was so hot out that I spent the day chillin; did my walk early morning and just got back from my evening walk (it's 10PM here now). I watched him destroy a '68 442 vert and then a '66 LeMans that actually came out OK except for the wheels, I liked the color. I'd seen the show once or twice before but I'd been reading while I watched it.

How about a just a - YAHOOO, YEA BABY, and a HIGH FIVE!! But save all the tears for when your dog dies.

I dono I think that Overhaulin' s alright, its not the greatest show ever, but its not bad. And you have to admit that Chip Froose has the best car sketches ever!! The cars look like they are jumping out of a sheet of paper!

Yeah, the first time I saw him draw the new soon to be car, I thought it was just photoshopped or something. It was unbelievable!

I think the show is O.K. Who knows, if I got my rust bucket completely made over for free, I'd cry, laugh or do whatever I thought the producers wanted!

I've seen a couple of the Overhaulin' cars and they are nice, but Foose needs to provide front license plate brackets.

The owner of the Rustang brought it to a cruise night and sure enough, it had Foose's signature smoothed and tightened front bumper. The owner WIRED his plate to the grill of his Foose Mustang. It looked like he used garbage bag tie wraps!!

My only real complaint about Foose concerns what he said at the Barrett-Jackson auction when Unique Perfoprmance put the first of a series of Foose modified 2005 -2006 Mustangs up for sale.

While urging the crowd to bid higher, he told the bidders that it was a quality car, done right -- not a Overhaulin' car. (Paraphrased.)

I was floored! Was he insulting his own work on TV, his TV "A" Team, or just letting the TV "marks" know they got what they paid for????

Apples to Oranges, since one of them reviews cars and the other modifies them, but I'd have to agree with Top Gear being better.

They just aired the episode tonight where he puts the Range Rover Sport up against a Challenger tank, and nearly beats the gun! Same episode features a game of soccer played by Toyota Aygos.

I love Overhaulin, just because I like modified cars... However he did a tan 64 Vette that was horrendous. I can't stand the rags to ritches show, Barry White annoyes me and he is always saying "well a super muscle car this, and a super muscle car that..."

On a side note, what caused the fued between Boyd and Chip? Anybody have details?

Some of the cars they do are quite awesome. I find that he usually puts wheels that are too big for the era, but thats fine, wheels are interchangable. And who really cares about having a front plate, they just ruin the lines of the car. I know I'd take my chances not having one if I drove such a unique car.

I really can't complain about the stereos they put in either. 99% of the time they hide the new style head unit in the glove box to retain the original style interior. And who really cares if the trunk is pimped out with a nice sound system? I'd take that over some crappy stock sounding system any day.

So basically I enjoy the show. They take mostly pieces of junk and make them into gems. Most of the time the owners don't have the time or money to do anything even close to what foose does to them. Sure the reactions might be over the top, and the pranks might be a bit cheesy, but in the end the owner is getting a brand new car.

The following is third party information, deemed reliable, but not guaranteed:

Chip worked for Boyd as a designer. He was responsible for a few of Boyd's most popular rods. Boyd wasn't doing a very good job of managing his company and some say he had certain "health" issues compounding the situation.

Boyd was removed from his own company by shareholders and Chip became manager. For a time Boyd didn't have the commercial rights to his own name.

Other than that, everything was just swell.

That's what I was told, but I wasn't there. I do remember Coddington starting a new company years ago using just his first name, and not his last name.

Obviously they aren't the same but then again, nothing produced on this side of the pond is quite like Top Gear, not even our own car review shows. Car & Driver Television? Motorweek? Both are beyond lame.....cold, no entertainment value, forced, heavily scripted and poorly "acted". Even with Clarkson's endless USA bashing I'd rather watch that than anything else, with Fifth Gear being a close second. The production values and camera work on both shows are just wonderful. Why we can't come up with something like that over here is beyond me. Instead we get Pinks and American Hot Rod. Ouch.
