  • Old wax ad on TV

    Hi all

I remember an ad. on TV from years ago (10?) where they would spray a hood with a fire accelerator and ignite it. A few seconds later they would wipe it all off with a terry cloth and there was no damage to the paint etc.

Anyone here remembers the name of the product? Was it Meguiars or something else?

    Possibly Liquid Lustre?
The "protected even from the ravages of lit lighter fluid" is/was a popular "gimick' at shows and commercials, as it looks dramatic, but the soot from the lighter fluid isn't detrimental, and the hood doesn't get hot enough to bubble the paint. I would expect more damage to be done by the fluid than the flame. It's all for show, with no "real world" credibility, IMO.
The grass is always greener on the septic field.

It definitely was not Meguiar's running an add like this.

Most of the car wax infomercials follow the same script, light the hood on fire, put the fire out, show there's no damage, tell you to,

I believe you're referring to Auri. What a lousy product! I was one of the many suckers who purchased some of that snake oil. However, I never had the guts to put it on my car.

My cousin asked to use some on his new Festiva and although I tried to to talk him out of it, he was adamant on using it.

Lo and behold, a day after he applied it on his painted plastic bumper, it seriously damaged the finish. I warned him!!

Believe it or not, that stuff is still being peddled. However, now it's through the internet. Go ahead and do a Google search. I remember one day stumbling upon their webpage.

          Dura shine maybe?

I took a class back in early to mid 90s taught by Mike Pennington. He lit a test panel on fire just like the commercila did. Then we all got to touch the panel after he blew out the flame.

It was barely warm! Some how the fuel and the direction of the flame keep the panel from getting hot.

I remember my dad bought GS27 from an infomercial and he never used it on his truck. We did however, bring it to a friend of ours and used it on his 1990 Ford F150 that wasn't in great shape and it turned out horrible in the area.

I just did a search for GS27 and it looks like they are now selling in Germany (not sure what language it was in). Interesting though.

Heat rises... so the metal will get very little of the heat.

I remember those commercials. I think maybe it might have been NuFinish. I remember seeing lots of commercials for NuFinish way back. I also remember they would run a NuFinish car through a car wash 50 times to prove that it was durable.

These commercials are a joke at best. Their tests are misleading and unscientific. Lighting the hood of your car on fire with lighter fluid proves nothing.

They still run them. Guess Polishing your car hasn't changed that much since 1991!!!!!!

Actually, the fuel ( in the case of the Auri commercial, lighter fluid) vaporizes.

It is the vaporization from the fuel and not the fuel itself that burns.

The vapors are above the surface, and burn off so quickly that it cannot scorch the paintwork.

I think the pruduct was called URIE,or smothing like that. I remember the guy had a British accent and a crazy bow tie. My dad bought the stuff, it was all right,if you want to set your car on fire. They also did the key scratch thing. I'll stick to my Meg. stuff.

                          Yep...it was AURI!

I remember buying that junk as well. When you are working graveyard shift at the jail...every product offered on t.v. seemed reasonable at 3AM.

Not to mention, when did every infomercial company hire a guy with a British accent? And why did us suckers figure since he spoke in the Queens english he was more trustworthy?

Well, you answered your own question...we somehow trust Brits (or apparently some marketing types think we do). Those infomercials always seem to have a Brit demo'ing the product to the amazed American.
