  • Retirement Cleanup

    Guys,

I'm taking a break from office cleaning. The final cleaning -- emptying files, sorting "stuff" to take home with me, thinking about where in the heck I am going to put all of the "stuff" I have collected in my thirty-eight years as an elementary school principal plus four years as a teacher.

Darn, I'm going to miss it. Not all of it , but most of it.

I have plenty to keep me busy -- forty acres of Nebraska prairie, two Harleys and two trucks to maintain, a year old golden retriever pup and another golden pup on the way. My wife is also retiring after forty-two years of teaching and she has some plans for me too. Fortunately her travel tastes are simple. I'll manage the travel OK or she can just go with her friends.

    It's been a "heck of a ride".

    Tom

Congratulations to the two of you! Nice job.

From what I understand from other retirees, you'll be busier than you've ever been in your life.

Congrats Tom on both retirements. Now there will be no excuses for those Harley's and your trucks not to shine everyday.

Oh yeah. There is no doubt about that. Since I retired three years ago I'm wondering how I kept things all together while I worked. I mean compared to retirement, work was like a vacation. I can't remember when I haven't hit the sack dead tired for all the things I felt I needed to do.

Latest is I'm buying a new home. (getting a 3 & 1/2 car garage this time) and I'm readying my existing home for sale. Planning a trip to Monterey and a couple trips to Mexico this fall. Need to get that accomplished before I leave for Cape Coral for the winter months. As if that wasn't enough, I still detail 1-2 cars a week for most of the summer months.

That said I find a lot more satisfaction doing the things I want to do then I did with a job where I did what they wanted me to do.

I wish you a great retirement tgull. There is life after formal work and it is a good one. Stay busy, stay healthy, stay happy.

            Tguil,

I just finished the first year of retirement after 35 years, 32 as an elementary principal. There is life after leaving the building. I still miss the kids, but some of the rest of the job I can honestly say I don’t miss at all. As for the “stuff”, I had several van loads stored at the building. I now have a neighbor’s garage and also the front porch pretty well loaded. My wife says, Garage Sale. I think I will have to agree. It is interesting to see what you have kept because you are sure that you will need it.

Enjoy retirement and remember that you can say, “I don’t want to” or “I don’t have time right now” when asked to take care of some of the problems. I am still the NAESP rep for Ohio, so I have a pretty good out when it comes to not being able to commit to things I don’t have time to do. Get that golden trained and I will come out and hunt pheasants with you.

A BIG "CONGRATS" to you and the misses. I'm looking at about a year and a half to retirement, after thirty seven years in the electrical construction industry so I won't have all the clean out , only my tool box . So again Congradulation, you deserve it.
