  • Who uses cell phone to navigate?

My buddy at school told me the other day that I only need to install an off-board navigation software on my cell phone and add a Bluetooth GPS receiver, then my mobile can be used for GPS tracking and tracing, the software he named was called Nav4All, developed by an European company just recently, does anyone have more detailed information on this thing?

If you cell phone has blue tooth technology built into it, I would think you could use any bluetooth compatable reciever as long as you turn the NMEA on and turn bluetooth on to find the receiver. You are going to need some type of software on your phone whether its a java app to get the info from the receiver to the phones software. Check with your cell provider, they should beable to help you out with what you need.

I have Nextel, so my phone has GPS built in aswell as TeleNav for the java app. I only used it a few times because I had a 30 day trial period with it and it was pretty cool. Supports autorouting, but I still prefer my Garmin GPSMAP 478 that I use in my boat and my truck when I travel. You are always going to be limited to what you can do with a GPS on a cell phone, but it does work good.

the thing is, I'm planning to go to China this summer, but according to what I've gathered so far, Garmin doesn't have the map in China, plus, those things you mentioned are all on-board navigation system, they are expensive at the first time I install them, but actually I'm not a frequent user, (com'on, Ashland is a pretty small town), the reason why Nav4All caught my attention is that it's an off-board thing, and it's free to download, well, I heard at least up to this moment, it's still free, but since it's a pretty new thing(accoring to the search engines), I don't know if it's reliable, God knows what's gonna happen if I get lost in China...Anyway, thanks for your tips.
