I will be buying a house soon and will have a garage of my own for the first time in my life...I need some ideas on making it look good and functional. Like flooring and organizing ideas. Ideas and pictures please. Thanks.

I have several comments. A lot of people paint their garage floors. In many many cases this will begin to peel for various reasons--moiture from below, hot tires. This makes it harder to do anything later if you want to use a glue down sysem.
Instead, you can get vinyl flooring in squares or sheets, but make sure it is the kind that can stand up to heat. Do a search on "garage floor" and you will get some ideas. It can be pricey, but it really finishes off the garage nicely. From a design standpoint, choose something that does not look bad from the street when your garage door is open. Black and white checkerboard is cool, but looks pretty stupid from the street, and will cheapen your home. White or off-white is hard to keep looking clean, as is black (which also looks bad from the street). Light tan or grey is probably your best bet.
You will probably want to place more outlets around the garage than are there now. I also hung a retractable extension cord from my ceiling. It plugs in to the same out let as the door opener. Just make sure you have affixed it securely to the ceiling--through the drywall and deeply into a joist, as you don;t want to give it a yank and pull it down on top of a car.
You may want to put a few extra lights in the ceiling, too, to help you see what you are doing. Shelves or countertop on either side is nice too, so you have a place to set product/polisher without having to move a cart or bench around with you as you work on a car.
And plan your built-ins. cabinets and shelves so that you can open your car doors without having to be an acrobat--or at least put some protective material on the wall/cabinet where the door edge would hit. For cabinets, you can look around for someone who is remodeling their kitchen--get their old ones (offer to help remove them so they don't get trashed). Then you can cobble them together in your garage.
And don't forget the cooler, big screen TV and "Do not disturb" sign.Last edited by Monk; May 22, 2006, 02:30 AM.
