  • That was painful...

    Back Online!

    Man that was painful! Our cable connection went out today around 3:00pm, story we were told by the cable company was that an underground cable was cut during some trench work in the area.

    Anyone here ever try Verizon Broadband Access for their laptop?

    Mike, I've been a Verizon DSL customer for two years and love it...I have a wireless network in my house so I can take my laptop anywhere and many times I'm in the garage looking up tips on Mequiars Online !!...their Customer Service is awesome as well...I always get a live person within 1 minute of calling them...I'd highly recommend it....if you're talking about something else, sorry if I confused the situation..

          Hmmm it's a shame that the cable companies don't have inspectors on the job to let the crews know where their underground cables/ducts are. At least, such is the case here in New York.

          I actually work for Verizon and it's my job to document construction interferences and make sure your service is not interrupted by taking the proper precautions before, during and after construction.

          Just another step we take to let you know we care here at Verizon!

            the companies digging are SUPPOSE to call for locates.

            but even if they do, sometimes the locates are TOTALLY wrong and wires get cut.

            if the locates are wrong and they do get cut, the company pays nothing and the cable company has to fix it for free.

              Over here we have something called "Code 753." This requires that all contractors who excavate in New York City and Long Island call in their locations of excavation to a call center.

              Once they call in the locations, that information is forwarded to utility companies who in turn forward them to their "mark out" crew, etc.

              The crews goes out and, with spray paint, mark the underground utility locations for the contractor. They must then obey the markings and dig safely around them. Any damages to utilities <= 2' around markings which were marked correctly become the responsibility of the contractor to repair at no cost to the utility company.

              And just for anyone who was ever curious about the spray painted marks on the street, here are what the different colors mean:

              Orange = Communications/Cable TV
              Red = Electrical
              Yellow = Gas/Oil
              Blue = Water
              Green = Sewer
              White = Proposed excavation
              Pink = Surveyor's marks
