Pretty neat to go through as well. Takes a while but really interesting.
If a man talks in a forest, and there is no woman there to hear him, .... is he still wrong?

I take it that you've passed through the canal?

They say it takes about 8 hours or so to go from one end to the other. That's one place I'd like to see in person myself.

I am in the Canadian Navy and have had to go through twice in my career. Really an amazing work of engineering. It does take around 8 hours, and being a foreign navy warship we get a slightly reduced rate at the penalty of having to go through at night, but it is all lit up so you can still see everything. You have to see it in person, worth the cruise to go through.

Are the vessels under their own power when they approach the locks, or do the tug boats do all the work?

I did see some sort of train pulling the ships through the locks with cables, or maybe that was to keep the ships from dragging the sides of the locks?

We were under our own power for part and the trains do pull you through. They use thier own workers to pull the cables to the ship and hook them up to bollards. Then the train pulls you along.
