These days I often sleep up to 9 hours! I used to sleep a *lot* less (more like 5-6), and I figured that time spent sleeping was time wasted. But I find that with more sleep the quality of my waking hours has improved dramatically; it *really* pays off when I'm exercising. At my age (going on 46) I guess I need more recharging.Practical Perfectionist

Depends on the time of year in the winter the normal 8 hours or more. In the summer I am lucky to get 8 hours, long working hours take away from sleep.Brandon

I would like to get 6 or 7 during the week but I usually don't make it and wind up with 5 hours. I spend too much time on the internet (and MOL).
On the weekends I get between 9 and 10 so that helps. Some sleep experts say you should get up at the same time every day. but there is no way I'm getting up at 5 or 5:30 AM on the weekends! I have no trouble getting to sleep.
I see from the vote that I have plenty of company.

I take too many classes at school so I never sleep.
Most weeknight I'll either take a a 4 hour night and possibly a nap during my mid day off period. I'll pull all nighters if I have to. Weekends are my sleep parades. I'll sleep from 12 PM Friday Night till 11 or 12 the Saturday, and from 8 or 9 on saturday till 10 or 11 on sunday, and then begins the weekday grind.
I figure I'll sleep when I die, so might as well stay awake.

The answer is: not enough.
I get between 7-8 hours a night. But it's still not enough. I'm more comfortable with 9-10 hours, but it's just not possible. I have to get up at 6 am to go to work. I don't get home until 4:30 or sometimes even 5. So trying to get 10 hours of sleep just isn't very practical. Not if I want to get anything done. I do sleep in on weekends.
What worries me is what's happening to today's students. Studies show that teenagers not only need more sleep but that their brains are on a different sleep cycle. They have difficulty forcing themselves to go to bed early, their cognitive functions don't really kick in until around 10 am. No, there isn't any way to *make* them "wake up" earlier. And....most middle and junior high schools and high schools start between 7 am and 8 am. What does that mean? That these students are going to school tired. And that the first two hours of school can't be effectively utilized. Is it any wonder test scores aren't improving? Sure it's just one factor. But if you really want to make inroads you address ALL of the factors.
And why do schools start so early?
Most school schedules are designed around.....not the students....but.....the bus schedule and the cafeteria schedule. Since buses must pick up elementary school kids for their late start elementary schools they have to finish with the older kids early. So high school and middle/jr high starts way early in the morning.
It should be the other way around. Young children are fine early in the morning. They wake up early and watch cartoons for two hours until school starts. Teenagers you can't drag out of bid. They're chronically tardy.
And what pattern are we setting for them? Adults that stay up late even though they have to get up early. Adults getting by with hours of sleep.
Is it any wonder that "driving while tired" has become an issue in car accidents? Flying while tired a cause of airplane crashes?
Well, it's now 15 min. past my bedtime so I'll sign off and wish everyone a good night's sleep. It's not just chocolate, it's a lifestyle.
