opinions on this job?

okay guys , ive been painting cars for 16yrs now, i lost my job a while back as the dealer i worked at closed down

now a job has come up at a rolls royce resto place..one of the bigger ones in europe, the resto manily old cars 1920 owards(which i have no intrest in really )

its a nasty drive, longer hours than i wanted , and i think it will hard work...but im thinking a RR mention in my resume will pretty much be a green light for any future jobs i apply for . then on the other hand , would i even consider it if it wasnt rolls royce? do i want a bad drive,hard work ,long hours just to say i work for RR?

any suggestions

If I were you, I wouldn't do it unless it was the only job that you could find. If you have to drive far in order to be unhappy at work it wouldn't be worth it in my opinion. But that's just a thought. You could also try it out for a little while and if it is as bad as you think it will be then you can always quit. But it would just be easier to get a job you liked to begin with. also if you are unhappy at your job the quality of work goes down, so they may not give you a good recommendation anyway.

It depends how much you enjoy your type of work and you have to remember it might be a while till another one like this comes along.

I work in a supermarket warehouse and one of the new blokes used to be a sprayer for Maserati and was layed off for the same reason as yours,
But due to not many vacancies in this field of work he had to take the first job that came along.

Which unfortunatly was a night shift at Tesco.

A couple questions to guide some discussion, either on the forum or just in your own musings:

How long can you afford to be out of work, financially?

How difficult will it be to find work that you do like? Are there many such openings or is it going to be competitive and slow going to find gainful employment?

Have you interviewed with this outfit? Ask about their facilities and see if they'll give you a tour when interviewing.

Would you consider something else in the interim until finding the ideal sort of job?

i could stand 2 months more out of work...then i really need to be working

my dream job would be muscle car/speceal intrest cars and thats very unlikey to turn up!

i have interviewed and had alook around...pretty sure i can bag it if i need to

i guess i either need to take that job...or take a supermarket job until something else comes up

maybe i sounded too negetive....it IS a superb outfit, and being RR they have all the tools ,space etc, the pay is pretty decent , i "think" id be given as long as it takes to do a perfect job...where as other body shops are rush rush all day...and i think it would rock if i mention in the future that ive worked at RR , im sure it sounds better than working at joes bodyshop etc

the downsides..terrible country roads that arent treated in winter, probably 1 hour a day longer hours than im used to and i would work 2 saturdays a month too

Certainly it is more rewarding to be able to a job properly and know you are not being asked to cut any corners. Too often skilled people like yourself are penalised for doing your job too well and not doing it at the lowest price for a mean minded customer.
You got to ask yourself what do you have to lose by taking the job, giving it a go for say 3mths, if the journey is a killer you would have a good reason to jack it in. 3 months into the job neither you or your employer are too tied in. Mentioning the travelling is putting you off may even get you a pay rise!?
What are the chances of your dream job coming up right now?
What are your other options?
If it is a long journey get yourself a cheap economical & reliable old car (anything Japanese/Korean should do) - taking a V8 muscle car may mean all your earning go on the gas!
