  • avatar contest! (and the benefits of registering)

I've heard some buzzing lately about how to get people registered and active members of the forum, and I have a few ideas....the first of which is to elaborate on the advantages of registering...

    1) Members have the ability to subscribe to threads. Easily see when what you're interested in has been updated, and get e-mails when its updated if you're really interested. You can also auto-subscribe to a post anytime you post or create a topic.

    2) Instead of "view today's active threads" you can "view new posts" which means things that have changed since you logged in. Pretty convenient, I like it a lot.

    3) Personal messaging. Yeah, kinda dorky, but you can communicate without sharing it with the rest of the world, and without opening up your e-mail address to spam.

    4) Buddy list: You can add users to your buddy list and easily see whether or not they're online and PM them. I haven't really used it much yet, but sometime soon I'm going to fiddle with it.

    5) Photo gallery...obviously uploading pics is a huge plus

    6) Having a profile and an avatar

This leads into the main thrust of what I'm proposing. Having an avatar contest, monster shine constest, or (as we've seen their success) the Christmas light and product naming contests are a huge draw. I know I joined the woot.com forums whenever they had a photoshop contest that interested me. I for one have my entry right here to the left. Aw yeah!

I just wanted to say on the subject of avatars that I hope none of you are offended by my avatar. I got it off google images when I searched for televangelists. One of my more TV-saavy friends informed me it's a televangelist named Benny Hinn. If anyone is offended by my photoshopping or my claim to be an evangelist of Meguiar's, I will certainly change it (I'm just referring to my tendency to tell everyone I know and see what they should do to make their car better and which product they should use....Meguairs, obviously!). Personally, I'm not a big fan of the message or the tactics of most televangelists, but that's another story for another day. I honestly can't say I know enough about each one to pass judgement, although I have on occasion researched one or two if a friend asks me for an opinion as to the validity of what they're saying. I looked up what Benny Hinn preaches and I have to say, I think it conflicts with what the Bible says. But, like I said, another story for another day.

        Edit...changed avatars since then.

Why is everyone worried about "lurkers"?? For example me, I, the director of air division and work 12 hour shifts as a critical care flight paramedic. Im in front of computers, cardiac monitors all day long. Last thing I want to do every afternoon or evernight is to look on the internet, or this forum. This forum is GREAT and I have LEARNED ALOT from the people here. But what you are not realizing is that there are a lot of postings in the forum here. A simple SEARCH or a quick browse will get you the answer you are looking for. Daily you see the same question being asked that was already answered and the moderators simply reply "This was already discussed, here is the link to it" If the people would use a search, they would not have posted it. Maybe you are not aware what people are doing. I dont post that much, because 95% of what I wanted/needed to know has already been discussed. But as seen how some of these members of this forum are being, classifying people as lurkers, maybe I will post the most obvious question to you, but not so obvious to me and they I will fall out of the lurkers category and into a Car Crazy category.

                Very well said Nick!

There is nothing wrong with someone wanting to be, or remaining a lurker.

Oh, and I like the idea of a contest...now hopefully mine actually worked this time!!

It worked! Now I have to work on getting it a little bigger so it actually shows off the reflection better

Here's an full size version of mine:

Its the reflection of the American flag in my garage after tons of photos and about an hour in my garage trying to get it "perfect" this is the one I came up with.
