interesting discussion...
actually, only part of my house in on crawlspace. The sunken living room & den are slab-on-grade.
I'm reasonably sure there's no insulation in my crawlspace... as the tile floors are freezing in the morning. Rest of the house is hardwood... a little better but still chilly at times.
Insulating the crawlspace is a thought, though I dread crawling under there... bound to be all kinds of creepy crawlies. Will probably just **** it up for a few months til it warms up.
Have thought of blocking off the foundation vents with styrofoam during cold weather, just to keep some of that cold air from underneath the house.
So far, it's not too bad. Just got my gas bill yesterday. Light, occasional use of the furnace has kept my bill down to $55 for december (was $15 in november), though being home all day every day for the past few weeks will likely drive my next bill up a bit.
At least the attic is reasonably well insulated, and the previous owner had already installed new dual-pane windows. Just did the programmable thermostat during the summer, so that's helping a bit as well. So far, so good. Just hope the relatively mild weather continues...
