  • Nissan's New Paint That Repairs Itself

    Link to article: http://www.physorg.com/news8675.html

"Nissan Motor said Friday it had created a paint that repairs scratches on its own, restoring a car's surface to normal within a week."

I'd like to get everyone's opinion on this.

The truck is not supposed to get from point "A" to point "B", the truck is the point.

Certainly sounds like a good product if it works as they say.

The general paint care steps would still apply, just shoudnt need anything like ScratchX, etc for the 3 years, only mild stuff.

The first thing I wonder is how polishable it is besides this new feature.

For example, can you wet-sand, cut and buff it if you like?

Sounds like cool technology as long as it doesn't limit you to what you can do ordinarily if you so choose.

Yeah, I read this on digg the other day. So, any speculation to how it works? I am thinking that it might be similar to this:

Put a scratch in a chocolate bar, add some heat, and melt the chocolate into the scratch. The clearcoat might become much softer when heat is applied.

I am also guessing this will come out for the Nissan Xterra, which hasnt seen a design change in 5 years.

Certainly would be interesting to see what kind of marks it can really fix... are we talking a mild swirl, or fixing wet sanding mrsk for you.

I dunno about the chocolate analogy. That is working on the pronciple of changing things from solid to liquid. I cant see them wanting people to go around liquefying their paint all the time.

Hopefully it just stops working after 3 years, without any change in color, durability, etc.

My bet is you'll see it in the Infinity line long before you see it at the Nissan dealer. I'd even go so far as to say that the first car with it would be the next gen Q45.

You have to remember that even if this new technology works, and if it ever does in fact end up on new cars, there will always be the need for car care products to take care of the jillions of cars already on the road.

And of course there will have to be products for taking care of new finishes like this new coating from Nissan.

Sounds like Meguiar's better contact Nissan and start working on a line of abrasives and polishes for working on the finish. Think of how cool it would be, you could wetsand it, then come back in a week to a sanding mark free finish ready for your lsp.

The new paint will likely make the average car owner even more careless.

This is EXACTLY what I thought first! How workable is it and how will it look when it's repaired?
