  • Was Offered Meg Related Job

Talking with a friend who runs a local chem manuf and sales co that I still buy from-he offered me a job selling for them, primarily Meguiar's products.

They are not a PBE....they manufacture and sell cleaning and specialty chemicals to many different industries which include auto and heavy truck dealerships and vehicle auctions. They also sell to a few hospitals and small manufacturing firms. They keep Meguiar's around because some of their clients use it, but they said they have nobody who knows much about the products or tries to sell them. That's where I'd come on to boost sales.

Really, I'm itching to talk to some people who have done or know about this kind of job. When I sold products, it was a very limited type of re-sell through my dealership and reconditioning facilities. I've put serious thought into trying to distribute products or do some kind of training/sales in this area.

Anyone have some comments...good or bad...lemme' hear them

    Thanks

Your best bet is to push the Detailer line. I've found I can under cut other companies (Auto Magic, Car Brite, etc.) and still turn a good profit. Meg's polishes and waxes are a little on the expensive side. You'll have to explain and show the quality of them. Most will understand that it's worth the little bit extra for the results.
What I'm doing is detailing with the detailer using Meg's products and showing him how to use them. This way if he has any questions, I'm right there.
What has helped me is having detailed cars for over 10 years, I can instruct them and provide support should they run into something. Most distributors are just salesman, they know what the products do, but not the proper way to use them to solve problems.
This is mostly a side job for me because I already deal with a lot of dealerships in my main job. I just figured while I'm there, I might as well sell them their detailing supplies.

The main competing detail lines around here are Car Brite and Pro . Sure, Meguiar's is more costly on some products, but it always seemed I used less and got far better results with it.

My pro experience will allow me to work with the detailers as well. Another benefit about this company is that they sell and service extractors, pressure washers, and many other related products.

Most of the body shops around here use 3M. That would be tougher to crack since that's what the PBE stores seem to push more. I know the reasons why from at least one that I used to buy from.

As you said, this is an additional line to your regular work with the dealerships. This would be my only line of sales with this company---can I make any money doing it? Hmmm

When I read about that, I thought of a couple of the vehicles I own as being showpieces for sales. Not that I'd drive one every day, but they would be attention getters on the nice weather days that would let me bring a few products around and have people see what they can do.

It also might give me an excuse to find yet another specialty vehicle that would be good to use on the job

A potential drawback is our climate (Northern Indiana=snow, cold, sometimes what seems to be 6 mos of winter)

Car Brite products are inferior. When comparing the Car Brite to Meguiars products, the Meguiars products will almost sell themselves. Although the 3M products are better than Car Brite, you should be able to cut into their market share too. In my experience 3M does not provide as good product support as Meguiars. They actually are recommending some rubbing compounds for use by hand! 3M Cleaners tend to scour the paint compared to Meguiars.

An important question for you is if you would like working a sales position. It's not for everyone, but if you like it you can do very well.

I have to step out for a class for a few hours but before I go I wanted to chime in on this and just point out Forum Rule #4

                  Turned down the job today

Their offer just didn't give me enough incentive to make that kind of move. Working with the products would have been great.

The sales territory was already so divided amongst their other sales staff that I'm sure I'd step on toes by selling to someone else's customer. If I didn't sell to them, I wasn't sure I could make a living at it.

                  Still keeping my eyes open

I actually used to work at a car dealer that used car brite. I think car brites crystal shine is good on faded paint and plastic. And easy off yellow wax is just like 16 megs it even smells like it.
