Yes, I exaggerated on "scarce", but when a guy has to actually TRY to find it in a store vs. when it was on every endcap in electronics and on the registers, makes me wonder how much longer it will be around.

I've bought from one of our local camera shops before. All the posts have given me some ideas to consider. I'm clicking on links tonight, then I'm going to hit that shop on Saturday to see what they say and what they might sell.

    Thanks everyone!

For what its worth, I do all my photo gear shopping at B&H Photo and Video in NY (I don't think I can post a link due to the site rules, but Google them, you'll have no problem finding the site). They are a very reputable company, I've purchased literally thousands of dollars worth of gear there and I've never had a problem. In fact, I just recently ordered a digital camera for my sister's birthday today. I placed the order Monday morning for it, and had to have it overnight shipped so it would get here today (her birthday) and even with paying $40 in shipping, the camera and memory card package I bought was cheaper than if I would have just walked into Best Buy to purchase it.

kpagel- Heh heh, I sometimes think my wife and I help keep the lights on at B & H

Yeah, buying used is a great way to save money. Another place worth checking out is KEH. They sell all sorts of film and digital equipment and their stuff is pretty accurately described as to condition.

For info on stuff like monopods and other supports systems, look up Really Right Stuff.

I have a cheap Kodak, its fine for what I use it for, it doesn't have any bells or special features. It takes the pictures and uploads them, thats bout it, but thats all I need.

I like the Canon 5D (12.8 MP full frame sensor) myself, but like kpagel says, some of the DSLRS can be pricey, as the 5D is $3,200! But you can get the excellent Rebel XT for less than a third of the price.

I'll have to try the 5D for photographing cars. The full frame sensor can come in handy there!

Canon makes very good digital cameras all across the line from DSLR down to compact digicam.

Fuji has a new digicam the E-900 that is very good also.

An XT can be had for far less than a third of the price of a 5D if you shop well, or if you buy used. I just sold a very mint Rebel XT (very little use, practically brand new) for $600 today. I'm picking up a 20D again, its plenty of camera for what I need. I was able to play around with a 5D a couple weeks back, its a heck of a camera but its far too expensive for my needs.

Back to the topic on hand... Pete, have you decided on a camera yet?

No, I sure have not...OT at work this week, so I get home around 8 PM and haven't done one bit of shopping, with the exception of a few websites on the cameras.

True, but conversely, easy to use does not automatically mean bad either. For example, ColorX is very easy to use and it gives great results.

I agree with your support of Canon. I really like the cameras they make.

Just a quick note on digital camera's

make sure which ever one you choose buy one with a higher optical zoom.

Optical Zoom is through the lens, so there is no image distortion

Digital zoom degrades the image quality

Optical zooms are far superior to digital zooms and should be one of the first things you look for in purchasing a digital camera

I agree....also,many ppl have no idea how to use autofocus...Press the shutter 1/2 way, wait for the light to turn to green, then snap and when you get someone to take a picture of you explain the auto focus..most people think the camera magically does it for you

Optical Zooms are better than digital zooms ... but... digital zooms are still very useful at times.

                              1. Digital zooms are desireable in certain conditions where it makes the difference in getting a shot or none at all.

                              2. A digital zoom will show things in your viewfinder that would otherwise go unnoticed if you only used optical zoom.

Here are three shots to demonstrate. Camera used was a Konica/Minolta DiMAGE Z6. First image is at 1x, second is at 12x and third is at 48x. Also significant is that the camera's digital zoom produces better, significantly better, images than the 12x image enlarged in Photoshop.

Don't use digital zoom unless it is really needed but don't ignore it either.

                              1x optical

                              12x optical

                              48x (12x optical + 4x digital)
