Alright I've changed my mind. I got to thinking about if I was on a conveyor belt with a rocket pack attached my back and have wheels draggin on the belt. I'd fly because of the thrust.

As the light changed from red to green to yellow and back to red again, I sat there thinking about life. Was it nothing more than a bunch of honking and yelling? Sometimes it seemed that way.
I am glad you have all come to your senses. I "WAS" going to say "I told ya so!!", but I won't. I was fixing to forward this to "MYTHBUSTERS". They would make it fly one way or the other!!
One thing I didnt think about, What if the Conveyor belt was causing a reverse draft by its reverse motion, that would definitely have to be countered with additional thrust, wouldnt it?

Thanks, but the real credit goes to the fine teachers of the University of California . I still see my Fluid Mechanics prof sometimes. I’ll pass along our regards next time I see him.

Be sure to shoot video if you try it. I want to watch!

Sorry about that! I typed up that response and hit the submit button before I read your next post.

Send it in! I’d love to see the guys fly a plane off a treadmill (and I’m sure they’ll find a way to make something blow up too! ).

Somewhere earlier I mentioned that I was assuming that the wings were above the boundary layer (that’s the air that gets dragged along the surface of an object) of the belt.
On the one hand it would create extra drag and you would need more thrust to attain the same ground speed. On the other hand it would also generate more lift so you wouldn’t need as high a ground speed to for takeoff.
I suspect whether you need more thrust or less or they cancel exactly is a complicated calculation. One that I’m too tired (and probably unqualified) to make.
I think you need to participate on the forum at Phyics.org as they are still debating this and have come up with several other considerations that we never even got into here. Looks like they have been at this a few months.
I can live with it as long as the airplane can move foreward. I actually had to sit down and write out a step by step scenerio of each phase of what was happenng. It was only after having seen this in writing that I found the error of my thinking.
Alot of variables to consider with my piddly handful of brainmatter.

I tried looking for the forum, but couldn't find it, could you post a more direct link?

What WAS your view, and what is it now?...I've gotten lost

Why does anyone assume the plane will remain still? No matter how fast the conveyer turns, the plane will still move forward. The plane will move along the "runway" at the normal rate, and the wheels will be spinning at twice the normal speed because the conveyer will be adding speed to them equal to how fast the plane moves forward.
Unless you tie the plane down or do something else to prevent it from moving, off it'll go! Moving runway or not.
Originally posted by DFTowel I've experienced this effect myself many years ago in an old Aeronca Coupe flying over the Delaware Water Gap. I had a headwind of over 60mph and an airspeed of 60 so in essence I "hoveredd" over the same spot for a moment. With a greater headwind or lesser sirspeed I would have been able to fly backwards.
Like some birds I've seen do before. The wind was so strong that the birds appeared to be hovering.
