  • Del Mar Car Show

    Hi Guys and Gals,

Many of you know that every year one of the largest Car Shows in the world is held at the old Del Mar Fairgrounds just a few miles North of San Diego here in beautiful ...and always Sunny ... Southern California.

The 2008 Good Guys Car Show - Sponsored by Meguiar’s - was this weekend and, as usual was a huge success. Again, over 2000 vehicles of every description, all 1972 and older and nearly all were restored to perfection.

Again this year I drove the 75 miles down to Del Mar from Huntington Beach “Surf City U.S.A.” to get there at 8:30 am (Show opens at 8:00 am) and beat the crowds. Note: If
you ever decide to attend this show in the future, do not arrive later than 9:15 am unless your idea of a fun time is walking a quarter of a mile from your car and waiting
30 minutes just to buy a ticket.

As usual took tons of photos, met some great guys from the “Over the Hill Gang” Car Club, met Mike Kennedy in the Meguiar’s booth (GIANT BOOTH!!) doing a demo of Ultimate Quick Detailer and even had the pleasure of renewing our ongoing rivalry of
U.S.C. vs. Notre Dame with Mr. Barry Meguiar.

Mike Phillips ... as you know, I’m not bad at building Web sites, but I still do not understand how to post photos to the Forum so ... as usual ... I have put up a small Web site with a couple of dozen photos of the Del Mar Car Show for all to enjoy.

    Here is a link: http://www.nailarttreasures.com/delmar408/

Since many of you were not yet members of the Meguiar’s Forum in March 2007,
following is a link to the post for the 2007 Del Mar Show with quite a few photos.

Discuss Car Shows & any Industry Events. Post pictures from Car Shows or Industry Event.

    Enjoy.

          Re: Del Mar Car Show

I attended on Sunday and took about 300 pictures that I'm still working on cropping and resizing and going through. I'll post the bests of the best on here to give you guys a taste of the cars there. Some of those machines are so amazing that pictures can't even show the attention to detail and perfection of them.

I went to the Meguiar's booth at about 8:15 or so and there were only two Meguiar's representatives there but then I saw a bunch later.

All in all it was a great day and the weather wasn't to bad, occasional clouds but when the sun came out it was perfect.

          Pictures later on today...

I was there on Sat, and took a lot of pictures as well. I missed Don Prudhomme, which was a shame, but I was pretty much beat at that time. I'd been carrying around my bottle of #83, polishing & finishing pads, & PlastX all day long, and had been looking at TONS of great classic cars. Definitely a good time!

I was looking through my pictures of some of the cars that I saw, and came across this pic, which made me want to cry:

You can barely make it out in this picture, but there are tons of hologram swirls on the back of the car there. I saw it when the car passed me up, and I tried to get some shots of it.

I don't get why some of these owners who come to these shows don't know the proper way to take care of their cars!!! This old car had some poor holograms in it, and I saw a Plymouth Belvedere getting wiped down with a MF towel. That's it - no QD, no other liquid or wax that had just been applied; just the towel. I could actually see where the MF was leaving scratches in the paint. It made me want to grab the towel out of his hands and go, "Stop. Just stop. I can't bear to see you put MORE scratches in such a neat old car..." But instead, I bit my tongue & walked away.

Cant' tell you how many 'seasoned' car enthusiasts that have attended our Saturday class and then at the end of the class when they're filling out our feedback form they write something along these lines...

"I find out today I've been doing things wrong for all these years"

This is one of the reasons Meguiar's has always put the focus on education in all the segments of the auto industry as well as other industries, for example both sides of the Marine industry, the manufacturing side and the ownership/maintenance side.

Believe it or not, a lot of people look at swirls and think that's how paint is supposed to look!

One of the things we do at our Saturday classes is teach people how to evaluate a car's finish, not only their car but any car, so there's plenty of friend-to-friend education going on outside of the classroom after the fact as our students go back out into their world, to shows like this and talk to their friends about their car's finish.

And of course there will always be a segment of enthusiasts that just don't care about the finish quality of the paint, as long as the sheet metal underneath isn't rusting, the paint is working.
