Wax on top of NXT?

Hi everyone, I'm new here

I've been using Meguiars Deep Crystal polish and wax on my car for a number of years, until recently, when I bought a new car and had it professionally detailed. My detailer used NXT, and it looked amazing.

My question though has to do with some talk I've seen going on at other car forums. I've read where people use a carnuba-type wax over top of NXT to give an even deeper shine. Does anyone have any experience with this? It doesn't make much sense to me, but I don't know much about waxes.

I picked up a bottle of NXT and plan to try my own hand at detailing the car, and I was wondering if my left-over deep crystal wax would provide any benefit over top of the NXT.

The procedure of applying a Carnauba wax over the top of another product, usually a synthetic, but not always is called topping, or layering.

Far be it from me to stop somebody from experimenting with topping NXT or anyone's base coat of wax.

Meguiar's Deep Crystal Step 3 Carnauba Wax is actually a Blended wax. You can read more about it here in Meguiar's *NEW* FAQ

6. Are polymer sealants better than traditional carnauba waxes?

Here is what I suggest if you think you want to try applying a topper to NXT Tech Wax.

First, Start with two well applied coats of Tech wax on a flat panel, such as your hood, or deck lid.

Then, to one half of the panel, apply your choice of a topper, follow the directions and apply and remove accordingly. Then, inspect both sides under both artificial light and bright sun light at different angles.

Make sure you're improving upon the results you have already achieved by testing a section before applying the topper to the entire car. If you apply to the entire car without first testing and inspection... how will you know if it looks better?

just for giggles I topped NXT with #26 on my dark green GT. It seemed to darken the paint (kind of wet look). I received more compliments after this process than after 2 NXT coats!!

I have a black GT and with the NXT it looks great but after reading scrub's post i'll have to try topping with #26.

Nice Cobra! Welcome to this site, lots of Mustanger's here. I haven't tried topping NXT with another wax, mainly because the shine and depth that NXT developed was amazing. I may have to try some Gold Class or #26 on it just to see.

Hi Mike,
to me, that sounds like you don't buy into it. do you? to me it seems if there is a layer of protection already there, the second coat can't do its job (look wise, not from a protection point of view). probably over thinking it, but curious just the same.

Nice cobra man.....thing is lookin good! Love the color. I have also been debating on whether or not to put a coat of 26 over the two coats of NXT.

Wow! Thanks for the replies and welcomes everyone. I guess I just wanted to try the Deep Crystal on top of the NXT because I still have so much if it left. I promised my mother I'd wax her car sometime this summer (assuming I can ever remember to bring my detailing stuff when I go), so I might use the Deep Crystal on that. It's a 95 Civic, which has never been waxed in its life. Lotsa swirl marks from the guys at the car wash drying it for her. I bought some scratch X but I'm not sure if that's the right stuff to do the whole car with. I think I might also buy a Random Orbital Buffer.

Looks like I need to learn what all the numbers mean. What's #26? Next time I wax my Cobra, I think I'll re-claybar it. Never used claybar before, so this'll be a first (eek, maybe I should experiment on my mom's car first, next time I visit her).

#26 is Hi-Tech Yellow Wax from the Pro line. I purchased the wax to use on my bling bling (chrome) rims. I saw a forum that said NXT does have some cleaning properties and I didn't want to chance it on the rims. Don't know why, just told not to.

Clay is very easy to use. I didn't think it would make a great difference on a car with light surface contamination but it does. It seems to shine even more. I've had good luck with Mammy's clay bar (Mothers) as Meguiar's was not available locally. I'm going to use Meguiar's tommorrow though.

Use this for help with clay.

Hey,

I have been topping the polymers(#20) with a blended wax(#26) for a LONG time and love the results!

However, with Meguiar's NXT Tech Wax, I have tried topping it with both #26 and/or #16. I have to say, I like the look of the NXT all by itself. I will continue my #20/#26 combo when I use those products. But otherwise, when I use the NXT, I will use it by itself!
