  • Cleaners in waxes

Hi all, I have another question. Does the mild cleaners that some Meguiar's products contain remove polishing oil if I polished prior to applying wax? I've heard that NXT and GCCP both contain some cleaners. Does Ultimate wax contain any cleaners in it?

I didn't think GCCP had any cleaners? NXT does have a very minor amount.

Regardless, any cleaners that NXT and GCCP may have are trivial and would not remove polishing oils (or not substantially). UW would be the same.

It would only be dedicated cleaner waxes such as A12, M6, M66, ColorX, D151 etc that would remove polishing oils.

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

the procedure will be polish prior to wax. if you polish without putting a layer of wax, anything, even rain water would probably wash it away.
Polish adds glossy layer, however, to keep this layer, we must have waxed it after polish.

Regarding what I said about GCCP having cleaners in it, I had read that on another forum. I realize that the polished layer must be protected, just wasn't sure if any of the cleaners added to non cleaner/waxes would remove polish, making that step in vain.

Rubbing any liquid around with an applicator will have a cleaning action.

The simplest thing is that if you put polish on a black panel of paint, then wax it, it still looks good, and didnt revert back to how it looked before. Although the Gold Class wax does have a lot of polishing oils in it, which can contribute.

This may sound like a dumb question, but would paste wax have less cleaning action than a liquid version of the same wax?

I agree. Every year I do an extensive polishing of the 25 year-old single-stage lacquer of my El Camino. It involves multiple apps of M07, including overnight soaking. The effect of the oils in M07 is much more noticeable on the old paints than in modern less-permeable finishes. I've tested many waxes and sealants over the years to find products that don't reduce the gloss and depth I've achieved with the oil-rich M07 and discarded quite a few. NXT, Gold Class and M26 are on the "good" list. I'm no chemist, but I'm sure that the makeup of any wax includes some type of carrier solvents. I do know from experience that those three I've mentioned (I've never tried Ultimate) don't have a detrimental effect on the oils I've already rubbed into the paint.

                No.

Apart from the ingredients that make a paste a paste, it's performance is no different to a liquid.

We don't classify NXT or Gold Class as "cleaner waxes" but rather as "polish waxes" as both have some polish in them. These, plus Ultimate, M26, M21 and Deep Crystal Carnauba will not remove a polish that was applied previously.

ColorX, M20, Black Wax, White Wax, and of course good ol' Cleaner Wax will remove some or all of a previously applied polish due to the cleaners in them.

                    Erm, about that black wax,

Doesn't that already contain so much polish (compared to cleaner wax), in a way that for whatever it would clean out of the paint it would put a whole lot more back in?

Thanks for clearing that up everyone! I do realize now that wax having even a slight bit of a cleaning ability is just the nature of the product.

Actually, yes. But more than that, it makes doing a dedicated polish step almost unnecessary. As it is, we've always said that a dedicated pure polish step is optional anyway, and having the polish load that Black Wax has it's even more of an option.
