  • Hot Rims Chrome Wheel Cleaner

I'm working on my Dad's truck and the rims look bad, I tried some APC with a brush and didn't do any good. I went to the local parts store and got a bottle of the HR Chrome Wheel Cleaner to try. The rims had brake dust, and some rust on them I thought they were past getting all the junk off. Dad's truck get's wash when it rains. I couldn't believe the results. I follow the directions and used a soft bristle brush.

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

      Amazing result!!!

Now, for everyone else who reads this, please make sure that you have actual chrome wheels before using Hot Rims Chrome Wheel Cleaner. You can't believe how common it is for people to select this product and use it on billet aluminum, highly polished wheels. These wheels can look like chrome, but they aren't. An example of such a wheel is seen here:

Sure looks like chrome, doesn't it? But when they spray chrome wheel cleaner on bare, highly polished aluminum, the wheels end up looking like this:

Those milky white marks are completely dry in this picture. They are stains that have been etched into the soft aluminum by the acid in the Chrome Wheel Cleaner. Chrome is incredibly hard, durable material. Bare aluminum is extremely soft and delicate, so make sure you really know what your wheels are made of before selecting a wheel cleaner for them. The good news is, these wheels polished right back up to the same high lustre you see in the first image, so no harm no foul. But, understandably, it freaks people out (or just plain makes them mad as heck) when it happens.

Re: Hot Rims Chrome Wheel Cleaner

I use the Chrome wheel cleaner on my...I think they are Aluminum wire-wheel hubcaps...I don't get that effect...The edge of my hubcaps are shiney, like they are chrome, the middle bit looks like it's brushed or somthing... Would I get better results using the Aluminum cleaner? The Chrome makes them look new...except for the road rash :O

Re: Hot Rims Chrome Wheel Cleaner

Your hubcaps are most likely chrome plated. If they were bare aluminum you'd get the staining shown in that photo above - guaranteed. Unfortunately, we see this on a weekly basis. If you've been using Chrome Wheel Cleaner with no ill effects, then you should be just fine to continue with it. The Aluminum Wheel Cleaner is extremely mild, which it needs to be in order to safely clean highly polished bare aluminum wheels without damaging the surface. But that also means it's not going to clean brake dust as effectively, but that's the trade off for having wheels made from such a delicate material.

Or the All Wheel Cleaner / Wheel and Tire Cleaner would be in the middle.

Old thread, ran across it while sniffing around looking for info on HR Chrome Wheel cleaner.

A retailer recently told me HR Chrome Wheel Cleaner contains a higher acid content than Wheel Brightener. True?

^^^ No, wheel brightener comes in a concentrate. And will eat anything it touches.
Hot Rims or All Wheel Cleaner and the consumer version and are a little safer. They come with a foaming sprayer so you get less atomization and less danger of inhaling the acid.

Wheel Brightener is the Profession product that we can mix. It is so strong that you need to ware full protection with it. And only a pro should handle it.
Ie: Gloves, respirator (not a dust mask) and eye protection. It's Hydrofluoric acid and is very dangerous.
