  • Hot Rims - Painted Aluminum

    Hello everyone,

I have been searching for a while however can't find if hot rims is safe for painted aluminum wheels. They are factory 2012 Camaro 20" wheels.

I have used hot rims before and love the product, just want to make sure it's safe before I possible hurt a set of new wheels.

I did a small test and the only thing I noticed was it appeared to oxidize or rust effect on the brake rotors but that was about it.

Thanks for any advice or help you can offer.

Yes, the All Wheel Cleaner is safe. Though the Aluminum Wheel Cleaner is even milder, if you wanted to be even gentler.

And then good quality brushes/etc to agitate.

If you clean often enough, or use something like the Brake Dust barrier, you may even get away with just car wash soap.

Being a new car I am in that "keep everything clean mode". I will switch up to the Aluminum variant and see if that is a little easier on the brake rotors as well.

The main thing was to give them a fast clean off before polishing.

Thanks again Murr for the information.

The surface rust on the brake rotors is coming from the water, not the wheel cleaner. The Hot Rims All Wheel Cleaner is perfectly safe to use on your factory painted wheels. Just follow the directions on the bottle and work on one wheel at a time from start to finish and you'll be fine. The big no-no with this or any other wheel cleaning product is letting it dry on the wheel. That's just a terrible idea and can still lead to issues, even on factory coated wheels. But if you spray it on, let it sit for 15 or 20 seconds, agitate with a wheel cleaning brush, and then rinse thoroughly with water you'll be perfectly fine. Never spray onto all four wheels and then go back to the first wheel and start agitating. One wheel at a time, start to finish, and you won't have any problems.
