  • Which protectant has the most sunscreen?

I know that the NXT line of products are the newest from Meguiar's, but I was curious about protectants (for vinyl and plastic).

Which of the Meguiar's protectants, taking all of them in consideration (not just NXT), has the most sunscreen/UV blocker?

Do any of them contain plasticizers, chemicals that keep plastic & vinyl flexible?

    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance!

Some people say that 303 protectant has the best UV protection and Vinylex the next, but I would like to know whether there is any source from independent test.
TurtleWax 2001 Super Protectant also claimed "the best" UV protection.

I heard that plasticizer can be not so desirable for some applications, and thus some protectant designers intentionally exclude plasticizer.

As a non-chemist, I get very confused when I see tiny bits of sentences available to consumers that look like chemical info. The Wax Shop says their protectant do not contain amines because it hardens plastic, but Vinylex contatains alkanolamine for good cleaning ability, . . . .
I spent some time to find out which protectant contains silicone or not, but now it seems that it was largely waste of time.

On the bottle of NXT, it reads that it helps keep plastic flexible.

By the way, I have other question about NXT Protectant.
When I apply vinyl protectant on my vinyl seat, I also apply it to stiching that is made of fabric. But on the NXT Protectant label, it reads it is not for fabric.

I don't know if it has the most protection, but I really like Natural Shine. It leaves a nice matte look which is nice since I use it on my dash. I think that the Gold Class Vinyl protectant, NXT, and Natural Shine all have great UV protection. If you maintain with Interior Quik Detail, you can always be assured that your vinyl is protected from UV rays.

I remember reading an article, a while back, that it is good to use a vinyl or leather protectant (depending on which interior you have), on the stitching of the seats. The protectant will help to keep the vinyl or leather, from drying out around the stitching. This "drying out", over time, may cause the vinyl or leather to separate from the stitching, because the fabric around the stitching is under constant stress because the stitching is what's holding things in place.

I think when the NXT protectant says not to use it on fabric, means not to spray it directly on fabric seats, because it would make them wet and create a bit of a mess.

I spoke with one of our chemists about this and his reply was all Meguiar's protectant contain the appropriate amount of UV blockers for the surface they are intended to protect. Using a Meguiar's vinyl, rubber and plastic protectant will provide honest, reality-based protection, don't be fooled by products that try to equate ratings used for sunscreen lotions for your skin with ratings used for UV protection in a product formulated for your car. It's not the same technology. Sometimes you just have to put your trust in the name.

Typically the more important decision is whether you want a matte finish or shiny finish, or more cleaning or less cleaning. The choice in Meguiar's dressings/protectants is more about your preference for appearance than for protection because the protection is already built-in.

Do any of them contain plasticizers, chemicals that keep plastic & vinyl flexible?
Drawing from memory, I had this discussion quite a few months ago with the same chemist I spoke with today and there is a misconception about plasticizers. Plasticizers are an ingredient used to maintain flexibility in a plastic or vinyl component, it works when it's a part of the original mix to make the part. To use it in a formula to be applied to the component after the fact, will tend to cause the component to dry out or deteriorate because it will cause the plastizers already in the component to migrate out.

At least that's what I remember. I wrote his comments on this topic down on paper and will try to dig them up to verify, but I'm pretty sure this is what I was told.

One quick comment, M40 Vinyl & Rubber Cleaner and Conditioner is a very popular product and has been around now for I'll guess over 30 years, maybe longer... Sometimes, time by itself can be one of the strongest testimonies for a product, and/or the ability of a company to manufacture product that do what they claim.

As I mentioned above, sometimes you just have to make the decision for yourself that you're going to place your trust in the name on label. I've been using Meguiar's since I started waxing my first car after getting it painted in 1978, that was a can of Meguiar's Cleaner/Wax, I've never looked back and I've detailed many, many cars over the years and I cannot remember one time that I didn't get the results I expected from Meguiar's products.

            Hope this helps...
