  • scratch x as a paint cleaner

I plan to clay my car then use scratch x as my paint cleaner. However, do I really need to work the product in since there is'nt really any swirls that I can visibly see right now. My car is 1 year old and the paint is in good condition. Thanks

Scratch X is only used to remove light scratches and paint imperfections like inbeded water spots or bird drop etching spots. If you want to use it as a paint cleaner for the whole car, it will take too long. As a start up, you might consider using Deep Crystal Paint Cleaner for the rest of the car to prep the surface before using your choice of wax. Besides, this product can be found in any local auto part store for about 7 or 8 $CAN

      Hi fpalattao,

As romulus said, Deep Crystal Paint Cleaner is a much lighter cleaner, but if you want to use your ScratchX, then simply apply it gently to the surface and then remove it. It is versatile in that you can alter it's cleaning strength by how much passion you put behind your applicator pad.

While Scratch X will work....seems like an expensive product to use for cleaning. There is not a real lot of product in that tube. Other products should work just as well and will probably save you some money.

I used scratch X on my bosses 1992 Mazda B2600 that was coverd in oxadation yesterday. I applied it by hand and it took it right off. It made the paint look like new again. It did take a while to complete. I spent a little over two hours just rmoving the oxadation.

Scratch X works, but its more difficult to use as a cleaner than DC#1 if used by hand. IMO Scratch X will remove more swirls than DC#1, but it will also take twice the time to rub in. I guess if your praticing to be the Karate Kid it will be fine, but for the extra $6 get DC#1 and save your arms.

Since most of the new cars nowadays come with a very thin layer of clear coat, how many times in a year can we safely use Deep Crystal Paint Cleaner?

I'm under the impression that DC1 is mostly a chemical paint cleaner, with very mild dimishing abrasives. IE much less than ScratchX.

Anyway Mike will come in and set us straight.

The film build for clearcoats is in the vicinity of 1.5 mils for horizontal surfaces and 1.0 for all vertical surfaces,I was a painter at the Big 3 in Canada for many years,it does not sound like a lot of clear but that is the industry specs, just thought I would give you guys some background.Have a great day..LUKESTER

                    Hey,

                    If I may...

I suggest for a light cleaner to prepare the paint that is in very good to excellent condition is to use #9 Swirl Remover. The product will gently clean the paint, and help beautify the finish before topping with your sealant and/or wax.

A product like #9 when applied by hand or PC is extremely mild and may be used many many times without worry!!
