  • Ultimate Polish Description Question

    Hi Meguiar's!

I just obtained a bottle Of UP to try out and I was admiring the bottle and reading it's description. It said below the product name "pre waxing glaze". As far as I know, glaze means that it covers up or fills in swirl marks but I know for a fact that UP was derived from M205 and contains some SMAT abrasives so it won't really fill in swirls like your typical glaze type products.

Was this intentional? What are your thoughts about this?

    Re: Ultimate Polish Description Question

I think it is for marketing purposes so that people understand it's intention.

A glaze because it doesn't have all that much cut and adds a lot of gloss and oils (polishing oils) into the finish.

But, I wondered the same thing.

Don't read too much into it I guess lol

      Well................. yes and no.

What many people call a glaze is what we've referred to as a pure polish for years. The intent of this type of product is the create of gloss - it's sort of like a beauty treatment for your paint. But the vary nature of this type of product means that it's going to fill and hide fine defects. Some body shops use it primarily for that purpose, but as far as we're concerned the proper use of such a product is to apply it to a perfectly prepared surface in order to increase the gloss and depth of color.

M205 and UP both contain SMAT abrasives and both contain polishing oils. UP has more polishing oils that M205, but M205 has more cutting ability due to the level of SMAT in it. So both can fill and hide to some degree, but both can and will remove fine defects in the paint, it's just that M205 will remove more. Remember, it's M205 that we use when rotary buffing to remove any holograms that may have been created in the compounding step with something like M105 on a wool cutting pad.

As Shawn surmises, the term "pre waxing glaze" is on the bottle so that the "average consumer" gains a better understand of what the product is for. There is a surprising number of people who use "wax" and "polish" interchangeably, but there's no wax in Ultimate Polish, so we want the "average consumer" to understand that they need to wax after using UP.

          Re: Ultimate Polish Description Question

How much correction will UP achieve? Will it remove compound haze like M205? How would you rate it on the Megs abrasive scale?

I just ordered a couple of bottles but was wondering if I should've bought M205 instead.

            Re: Ultimate Polish Description Question

Ultimate Polish is derived from M205 but it does not offer as much cut, although it does have a higher concentration of polishing oils than M205. If you're doing rotary work and need to pull out some holograms created in the compounding step, we'd recommend using M205 via rotary to accomplish that task. But it's DA work you're doing and you've just got some light DA haze following your correction step, UP should get the job done for you. Depending on the paint, that could be done with either a polishing or finishing pad.
