  • thinking of trying Ultimate Polish

I just used #6 professional cleaner wax and topped it off with a coat of NXT 2.0. I am wondering if some UP will give me more depth and gloss - mirror type shine? Maybe i will also try to top the UP with some UW?

What is the condition of the paint?

I've used Ultimate Polish a couple times and both times have been on paint that was in excellent condition as these were newer vehicles. Each time I followed the polish up with Blackfire Wet Diamond and had excellent results. It adds an extra step, but I think if you do it right you will be rewarded with a nice high gloss finish ready for wax, provided you have paint in reasonably good condition.

I used a DA with an LC black finishing pad set to speed 4.

I like using the Meguiar's black pad too, just a little slower say 3.

That moment when you wipe of the UP and there is this crystal clear reflection....

The paint is in great condition, but i can't help but wonder whether a polish would yeild me even more gloss and depth?

I dont have a variable speed polisher though, just a handheld battery orbital buffer. How quick is speed #4 - is it on a scale of 1 to 7?

If you have the polish try an small area in an inconspicuous spot and see for yourself. Doing the whole car by hand is possible, but will take you quite a bit longer and your arm will be ready for a vacation when your done. Not sure about those orbital buffers. I know people use them for taking off wax but not sure how it would work with a finishing polish.

What's your prep procedure? That will make a huge difference on the final outcome. Do you ever use detailing clay after a wash to remove surface contaiminants?

Most Dual Action polishers (DA) have speed settings from 1-6, with 6 rarely if ever used. Here is another thread that touches on the different speed settings. http://meguiarsonline.com/forums/sho...&highlight=OPM

Yup, and I will actually slow it down to 2.5 or so for the final pass with no pressure what so ever.

Yes, UP is worth a shot. Eliminating swirls is one thing, but the polishing step is really what determines the final smoothness and depth of your finish. I use UP followed by BFWD and it's a great look. I also finish with Danase Wet Glaze (Wet Glaze 2.0) for that final pop, wetness and depth.

Re: thinking of trying Ultimate Polish

I dont have the UP yet and have never used a dedicated polish before. I normally just use a cleaner wax and yes i always keep it clayed.

I am definitely looking for that extra pop, depth and wetness and i am hoping this is what i need.

When would i use it - could i just wash my car and go ahead and use the UP or should i be striping what is on the surface now?

Re: thinking of trying Ultimate Polish

If it was me, I wouldn't strip it; UP can remove light swirls, so I'm assuming it will cut the LSP off in the process. UP is cheap and easily available at WallyWorld. I use it on a GG D/A and a white pad.

Give it a try and show us the before and after.

Do yourself a favor and invest in a DA as soon as you can. You'll being saying to yourself after you first use it "why didn't I buy one of these a long time ago".

Yes i think for the price of UP, it's worth a shot.

Are you guys talking about the Meguiars machine - is that what DA stands for?

Where's the best (cheapest) place to pick one up?

DA is basically short for Dual Action Polisher, many manufacturer's to choose from. You can buy the Meguiars unit at Meguiar's online or at other online dealers. I have a Griots Garage 6 that I purchased directly from Griot's and love mine. Lifetime warranty. Then you'll need to educate yourself on pads as there are many for different purposes depending on which brand.

I was in fact thinking about the Groits unit. I'm now waiting for a sale!
