  • Disappointed in UW

Very disappointed in UW after using it for the first time last week. I prepped the vehicle by washing, claying, ultimate compound on the DA then applied the UW.

After today's wash, it felt like zero protection on the vehicle. (Toyota Tundra, white). I had to really scrub the paint to remove the dirt and stopped due to not being able to remove above surface dirt.

This wax in my opinion is terrible. It has no protection after only one week later on my vehicle. Im know I applied it correctly and am not sure why the wax behaved this way. Any one else experience this?

You had to 'scrub' and couldn't remove surface dirt? Sounds like you got something on the paint.

Just pollen and it shouldn't be very difficult to remove after only a weeks time. I havent had any prior issues using other waxes including NXT. Maybe UW just doesnt work for my vehicle.

I'm still using UW despite my first application many months ago not being a great experience.

I think it's a solid product. Nevertheless, I have noticed that its claimed extra longevity hasn't really panned out much for me.

I'm just going to use it more often. In terms of a single week, it should have been fine IMHO.

Can you describe your wax application and removal process in detail?

Also, what about your wash process? Can you describe what products and at what ratios you used?

          Thanks

You can hear the crickets in the background, followed by a tumbleweed passing through an empty field . I guess we'll never know if he used the wax properly.

With a join date of 2008 and less than 30 posts, he/she doesn't stop by often. Or perhaps he/she lives in part of Ma hit with bad weather.

I've used ULW a few times on spotless clean, clayed, polished cars with excellent results.

On my own daily driver, get ready for it and let the flogging begin, I've gone through a car wash and with every other day rain, it's hard to judge longevity. okay, okay I admit it a few car washes......

With UQW on ULW it still looks good, assuming there is any ULW left.

Apologize for the delay. I used ONR for the wash, clayed with Megs clay kit, used Ult Compound via D.A. and topped off with UW.

I applied UW, let it dry using swipe technique. Wiped off with Microfiber and appearancewise was great. Next wash few days later, surface dirt (pollen) was a P.I.A. to clean. I had to use cleaner wax just to remove it. My statement that it seemed there was no wax protection was correct. I returned the wax and am using something else that works.

Its sad, but i hope you don't ditch meguiars products. If you want, you can go and give NXT 2.0 liquid a shot. It may be older than ULW, but its generally still well received even against the ULW. And don't forget the ultimate quik detailer. You can also try out deep crystal carnauba wax. I;ve tried it before, its still an impressive wax which in my eyes gives a shine which easily equals NXt, and nice depth.

                    Re: Disappointed in UW

Process sounds fine to me, although I usually use something a little less aggressive after UC to remove any micro-marring, but that has nothing to do with UW. The swipe test usually doesn't work with UW and you either wait 3-5 minutes or wait an hour for it to dry before wiping it off.

Remote chance using a cleaner wax to remove pollen before UW has time to cure and cross-link might have removed the UW, but the cleaner wax might have left some of it's own protection and you should of had some beading.

I usually use a California Duster followed by Ultimate Quik Detailer to removed pollen or light dust. However, some or most pollens have some wicked textures that will grip onto the paint surface requiring the car to be washed.

                    Sorry you were disappointed.

Is really important to search for what works for you. Meguiar's Ultimate Wax is really nice and delicate on the surface leaves a beautiful shine but hard conditions can cut on its performance like on many other options out there.
Hard conditions require extra attention to the surface.

                        Re: Disappointed in UW

Some dust particles or pollen may look innocent, but if not removed immediately (qd or wash) can shorten your wax's life. I guess one can't really have everything. Easy to use a product may be, but there are always "quirks" to each one. Even the NXT 2.0, or higher end sealants and waxes. You will find a wax (meguiar's, etc) that will work for you

                          Very odd.
My paint is very slick after many washes once waxed with UW.
My SUV is black, also a Toyota.
I use little to no pressure when I wash it, it cleans very easy and the results are stunning.

                            Re: Disappointed in UW

I wasn't too impressed with UW either. I used a typical application: wash, clay, polish, UW. UW was applied thin and even with my Megs DA. The coat came off easy and the shine was beautiful and warm. Very happy at this stage. Then a few washes (Megs gold class) and it seemed to fade. I switched back to tech wax and am not disappointed.
On a side note, after reading raves on another site about Wolfgang, I caved and decided to try it. With respect to the Wolfgang folks, I couldn't tell a difference between it and tech wax 2. Jury is still out regarding longevity as I just applied it today. We'll see, but I'm thinking I just wasted $40!
