  • Wheel Polishing with the DynaCone

Bare, high polished aluminum wheels can look beautiful when new, or if you keep them up regularly. But if you neglect them the shine can quickly fade. Worse, if you clean them with a wheel cleaner that's overly aggressive you can stain them. In fact, our Customer Care Center routinely receives calls from customers who used our Hot Rims Chrome Wheel Cleaner on bare, high polished aluminum wheels because they thought the wheels were chrome. Well, Chrome Wheel Cleaner is safe on true, quality chrome wheels but it really causes havoc on polished aluminum.

So what do you do with neglected, dull aluminum wheels? And what do yo do if you mess up and spray the wrong cleaner on them? The answer to both questions is our new Wheel Polishing Kit featuring our new DynaCone tool.

Here's a neglected, dull aluminum wheel. Remember, this is not a polished and clear coated wheel - it is bare aluminum.

That chrome center cap is what the entire wheel should look like. Should. This is just one of the wheels on a truck belonging to our newest Call Center employee, Nick Winn. Nick was excited to use the DynaCone on his wheels, but he wasn't too sure it would actually get the job done, given the state of his wheels.

This is how they came out.

    Impressive, huh?!

This was done with just the DynaCone, a regular power drill, and the All Metal Polish that comes with the Wheel Polishing Kit. For another project we used the DynaCone on the same wheels and took some stills showing how effectively it can reach into the slots of the wheels, etc.

But what happens when you goof up and spray Chrome Wheel Cleaner onto those beautifully polished, bare aluminum wheels? Well, for starters, you end up with these nasty white stains all over the wheels. For the record, these are the wheels on Barry Meguiar's '57 Chevy, and yours truly intentionally sprayed Hot Rims Chrome Wheel Cleaner on them to cause this mess. Yes, we sometimes do crazy things in order to demo a product!

This is after letting the Chrome Wheel Cleaner sit on the surface for a short while, then wiping it off. The wheel is completely dry at this point, but most definitely stained.

Take a regular corded drill, the DynaCone, add some All Metal Polish and spend just a few minutes working on the stained wheel.....

There you go, back to like new again, easy as that!

Remember, this is NOT for clear coated aluminum wheels, it's NOT for painted wheels. You can use it on chrome, however, but it's main focus is on bare, high polished aluminum. So if you've been neglecting your wheels like Nick did, or you accidentally spray the wrong cleaner on them, you now know how to quickly and easily bring back the shine they once had.

gotta love polished aluminum. They look almost better then chrome when cleaned and polished properly.

Mike, Stupid question. What speed did you guys use with the drill to avoid sling.

We start slowly with the drill just to get the polish worked into it, then we crank that bad boy up!! Obviously if you load polish on the surface of the DynaCone and then spin it up at full speed, you'll have more polish on the walls than the wheels!

        Mike,

How does the foam hold up against sharp edges? My Vette has polished Z06 wheels (they are not clear coated) and there are some fairly sharp edges on it.

Looks like it will get down in the nooks of the wheels.. Hope they hold together better then the red ones from the other guys

Well, there are going to be limits, of course, just like when you run a foam DA or rotary pad over something sharp - but all in all, the DynaCone holds up extremely well.

Well, that other cone has all the slices in it so there's more loose ends to catch on stuff. Plus, the base of that other cone is flat, not tapered like the DynaCone, so it won't come back out of the openings as easily as the DynaCone.
