looking in to purchasing the Ultimate Line in the spring. One thing I noticed was that there is no clay in the Ultimate Line. Does the Ultimate Compound replace the clay for this line? My car is light silver.

Is it better just to buy the clay and forget about the compound?

    Re: Ultimate Line

You don't have to buy the Ultimate Line only. You can pick and choose from other lines as they all work together.

Ultimate Compound and clay are two very different things. If you are going to use Ultimate Compound and have never clayed your car then I highly suggest you buy the Smooth Surface Clay Kit to make your finish smooth and remove bonded contaminants. This will allow you to use the Ultimate Compound more effectively.

IMHO, claying is the foundation for all the other procedures. UC is a magical product to me. Using it rekindled my OCD for the perfect finish. My cars had acid rain spots and small scratches that required UC. SwirlX wasn't aggressive enough and UP wouldn't have been either. Good luck!

Just remember, clay is clay. Ultimate compound is a cleaner. Clay removes bonded surface contaminants, and a cleaner removes below surface defects like scratches and swirls.

absolutely not! They serve two different purposes. The clay is used to remove contaminants on the surface of the paint that cannot be removed even by using UC. Ultimate compound is used for paint revitalization or paint correction (on a consumer level) and readies the paint for polishing and waxing. I wouldn't use UC too frequently regardless of environmental conditions.. The clay bar system, should be ok. Ultimate Compound and clay bars are equally as important for that nice shine

Speed 3 or 4, moderate pressure, and let it work for a good long time. Exactly how much pressure, time and even speed is going to depend on how the paint responds to it.

                    Hello,
I have heard of but don't understand the use or purpose of the clay.
What does the clay do for the finish of the car?
Does the color (light or dark) of the car matter when using the clay?
I have just purchased a new Fusion Hybrid that is Tuxedo Black, should I use the clay after washing the car? I know I need to read the instructions.
                    Thanks in advance.

Run you hand across the finish, if you feel anything then you must use clay bar. Surface should feel as smooth as clean glass.

                        Before:

                        After clay:

Basically- if you don't claybar, whatever contaminants are on the paint will then be under the wax, and can work into the paint itself. You don't want that. Start with a fresh canvas.

Yes, even when new, they're on there. When my Mom took delivery of her new 2010, I clayed before I went any further, and this came off the hood alone:

And yes- it's new, those are the window stickers under the clay.

After clay and wax. I did convince her the next day to let me remove the dealership sticker...

like it was mentioned earlier, you dont have to buy only the ultimate line and only use them with other ultimate products. I mix and match, just pick the best products for the job. I am a big meguiars fan but I wont buy the clay bar because it has the least good reviews. I use griot's products too. Also Yay ultimate wash isn't as good as the gold class for adding a good shine to the car. Its also personal opinion and the condition of the paint as well as the color.

For a new guy on the block as I am
                            Wash the car
                            clay the car
use swirlX, ScratchX or Ultimate Compound as I did.
Now time to use Ultimate Polishing Compound and take your time doing it. It will take some time to get good results as I found out.
Final step for me was to use Ultimate Liquid wax.
For a new guy like me it took me 2 wks to get it done.
One thing you will find out once you start this process you will NEVER be done.
