NXT over 16

I was just wondering if I could layer NXT over a good three coat of #16. My logic is this, #16 is somewhat harder to remove than NXT.So now that I have a good base of #16. I would use NXT to maintain the shine and slickness since it is quit simple to use. (Say every other week) And also will the NXT booster spray work over a carnauba wax….

let me say this based on my experience. When I topped NXT with #26, it gave that#26 look. When I topped #26 with NXT, it gave an NXT look. So my conclusion is that, those believing in the concept of topping WAX A with WAX B would give them the combined look of WAX AB is not true. At least for me. Coz I've done the experiment. The appearance that you would be getting in topping blah blah with another blah blah would always yield to the last product you applied no matter what is it.

Reading your post, I presume that you prefer the look of NXT that's why your topping #16 with NXT. I must say that even if you have 3 layers of #16 below NXT, the latter would still yield the final appearance.

But if you're main concern is durability of a hard wax like #16 and you're not after the appearance of #16 and still prefer the look of NXT (which I do), then go ahead! NXT will still bond with #16, they always say, MEGS products are compatible with each other. I believe so since it came from the manufacturer itself.

There is actually some other reasons to top one wax with another, for example topping ColorX with NXT Tech Wax.

Some people use the ColorX to clean the paint, restoring color and vibrancy and then add a second coating of another wax like NXT for it's extra protection features and appearance characteristics.

Other people like to top just for fun, it's kind of how some of us are wired.

In my how to article on topping, the one thing I try very hard to point out is that if you're trying top one wax with another wax for appearance reasons, then you want to do a test spot with a control area to check and be sure of your results.

There is always a lot of talk about topping NXT with other products, because this is a popular topic, I thought I would offer this simple suggestion.

If you think you would like to apply a topper over NXT, before you apply your choice of a topper over the entire finish, first do a side-by-side comparison and inspect your results carefully to insure that the test area does in fact look better than NXT by itself before applying your choice of topper to the entire finish. If you apply your choice of a topper to the entire car without comparing, you will never know if it improved or diminished the results created by the NXT alone.


Here's how to do a test spot,

First - Wait until you have two thin, uniform applications of NXT Tech Wax over the entire finish. Two thin applications always look better than one application.

Second - Find a nice flat panel like the hood or deck lid so that you can look down on the finish while standing over it. Apply your choice of a topper to a square section about one foot square being careful to do so in a way as to have a very distinct section with only the topper in this section. Allow the topper to dry according to the instruction and the remove with a microfiber polishing cloth or a clean, soft 100% cotton terry cloth towel. To be fair, you should apply a second coat in this same section to insure a uniform application. Again, apply and remove according to the product's directions.

After you applied and removed your choice of a topper carefully, inspect the two areas under different lighting conditions. Different lighting conditions will allow your eyes to see the different dimensions of your finish, such as richness, gloss, shine and clearness or clarity. View the two areas from different angles, from directly overhead, and with a light source centered in the area, like the sun. You may also want to have some friends compare the two areas also, a second set of fresh eyes may see something you miss, especially after you've been working on the finish and staring at the paint for hours.

If after doing this side-by-side comparison test in one small area, your eyes will tell you whether or not you want to continue with applying the topper to the entire finish.

There is nothing like spending hours building up layers to achive nothing beyond what the first layer did. That is the definition of weird, or crazy .

I like the word crazy better than weird, but I do notice on dark colors that two thin coats almost always looks better than one coat. I'm sure the same appearance factor takes place on light colored cars it's just harder to see.

After two well-applied coats however it's time to stand back and admire the results.

I tried the colorx+nxt+16 combo as was very happy...I may go just colorx +16 next time...the nxt seems to darken my silverstone a bit too much for my liking...the colorx really brings out the flake and silver...when there isn't two feet of snow and negative wind chills I may just get a chance to try this out
