Reappearing haze

I can't seem to fully buff off NXT wax. I'm applying it with a PC and buffing off with a few good microfiber rags. I don't notice this with my white car, only my black car. What the heck am I doing wrong?

Interesting.

I have probably applied Tech Wax to more cars, i.e. more different types of paint in different conditions and yet, I have never experienced this once. So let’s trouble shoot it.


A couple of questions,

1) Is your finish in excellent condition? As in new, or like new? If not, do you have a paint cleaner or a cleaner polish?

2) Did you apply Tech Wax using thin coats?

3) Did you allow it 10 -15 minutes to dry?

4) What kind of pad are you using on the PC?

5) What speed are you applying it?

6) How long are you buffing?
(you don't want to run the polisher till it breaks down, this is too long), just a few even, overlapping passes is all that's needed).

7) You say you're using microfiber rags? Are they a premium quality? Maybe you could try using an old-fashioned 100% cotton towel and see if that makes a difference?

Hi elcopan,

I did my black Acord this weekend with a PC and got awsome results. It was new and did no prep work just the NKT. I applied with PC at #3 setting left it on while I made pancakes for the family and removed it with the same setting. I agree with Mike something you did just didn't go right either in the application or the prep.

I would also add to the list of questions:

Did you cahnge towels as they "loaded up?"

Any fabric softner or dryer sheets used with the towels(ever)?

Was the paint cool?

Do you seperate "paint only" or "wax removal towels" from others?

I did NXT all by hand with no problems - came out great. Use light thin coats, keep turning your cloth and shaking it out. Temperature and humidity might have something to do with it.

You guys are great, thanks for the responses. I'm thinking I might of used a little too much product, in fact I am almost sure. How much do you guys use with a PC. I'm using it on a Blk 04' Nissan Maxima. I think I'm pretty much in check with the other things. For example, prep work was carefully done, towels were clean and assigned a specific duty, allowed 20 min to dry, etc.

I run a 'bead' twice around the pad about the size of a thick spaghetti noodle (1/8 inch or so). It's not a lot. but enough to do small sections of the car at a time & after a while, the wax will build up in your pad and the thin bead will be enough for the next section.

PS you might want to grab a fresh towel after you have removed all the NXT 'haze' from the car and "re-buff" the whole car again lightly...that seems to work for me when I get a bit of hazing/smearing

Beating the haze

I can vouch for the hazing. It looks like an issue only for dark cars. It happens on both of my black cars (paint is new on one and in excellent condition on the other). The crucial factor does not seem to be MF or terry (I used brand new Meg's terry), or drying time, but rather how long between buffing off and the second "clean section" buffing. If I buffed a 2'x2' square with one towel before going back over it a second time, and the haze was very difficult to get off. I ended up using two towels - first buff in the right hand, following right along with the second towel in my left hand. Could have accomplished the same by doing smaller sections at the same time, I'm sure. This eliminated the haze.

BTW, if it sits too long with the haze, it becomes impossible to buff off, but a shot of QD takes it off instantly.

I have used NXT twice, once by hand and by PC and have had no hazing. I to have a black car.
This past weekend I used a PC for the first time. I applied NXT with Meguiar's 8006 pad to the whole car. Left it on for about an hour then removed it using their Ultimate Bonnet and the results were excellent.
I think the longer you leave on the better.

So far I'm doing it all by hand, but may break down and get the PC before long. I'll try leaving it on longer. I did leave it the minimum 15 minutes in about 45-50 degree weather, so that may have caused it. As long as I did the final buff immediately after the initial removal, it was OK, but I did feel like I was trying to beat the clock. Next time, warmer weather and longer curing.

The temperature in Ft Lauderdale was about 82. I am not sure if that will have any effect.

Do get the PC, it is a breeze. Will cut your time more than half.

I have applied NXT by hand to a couple of dozen vehicles, all shapes sizes and colors, including black and have had zero hazing.

I allow at least one half hour drying time before removal and follow the directions on the NXT product label by using only 100% cotton terry towels for product removal.

I have had zero problems with hazing on Black or dark colored vehicles when using NXT.

I have one suggestion, be sure to avoid touching the surface with a QD (or anything else if possible) for at least 24 hours after the application of the NXT. Moreover, do not use a QD or water on the applicator. Rather, apply a little product and work it into the applicator and then apply. Allow the proper amount of curing time suggested on the label before removal.

Hazing experience also

Just had a good friend of mine report his problem with hazing on his 2003 black Z.
He says a couple days after applying NXT he gets a hazing on the surface. He says it reminds him of the haze one might get on the inside windows of a new car. It can easily be removed with his finger or MF towel.
The car is covered and garaged when not driven.
Also, keep in mind that this is Arizona. 110 deg with low humidity.
Any ideas?
I feel responsible because I recommended NXT to him.
