Does anyone know how Long you have to leave it before it goes in the rain? I did my Jeep Cherokee (red River Limited Edition) and two days later it rained. My trim went back to the way it was, all mottled. It looked great when I first did it. I should point out that it is quite cold here in Victoria Australia, almost the middle of winter and rainy although it hadnt rained for two days when I applied it.

You know it's sadly probably not going to hold up to rain. I don't get much rain, so it's not such a worry. I put it on there to protect it from heat and other environmental contaminants.

Water is a hard one to bottle with these plastic/rubber treatments.

Gold Class Trim Detailer is a water based dressing that does not have the same technology as Ultimate Protectant. Because of this, it does not bond to the plastic the same way that Ultimate Protectant and will wash off in rain storms. That is simply the beast of water-based dressings unless we are talking about Ultimate Protectant.

GCTD looks awesome but doesn't last through rain / washing. Most vinyl dressings don't - unless we're talking about UP.

Thanks for the replys guys. I redid it again and it hasnt rained for a couple of days. Still looks great. We had a drought here in most of Eastern australia for years (probably 13) now it seems to be over, just rains all the time which is great too but not when you want to keep your car looking nice. I'll just keep applying GC Trim Detailer every time it washes off. I shouldnt complain the farmers need rain so badly and we used to depend on rain to keep our water tanks full. But nevertheless Trim Detailer is a great product, I wouldnt mind betting that if it was left on in the sun for a couple of weeks it would soak in to the plastic. Did anyone reply on the other post about if it has UV protection?

Would it be worthwhile to top the Gold Class Trim Detailer with Ultimate Protectant in order to get the best both worlds (richness of the trim detailer and the bonding of the protectant)? Or would the trim detailer prevent the protetctant from bonding to the plastic?

I applied Ultimate Protectant to a trim that had turned grey/white and the only result was that there was shine. I then applied Gold Class Trim Detailer (one of the "originals" from a few years ago so it has a different label to the one on shelves now) and it actually darkened the trim. It was not back to original but with time and elbow grease it seems that it can be brought back to original. If it will wash off completely in the rain then that time and elbow grease will be for nothing.

Does anyone have any similar experiences?

Unfortunately, Meguiars say you must thoroughly clean all surfaces of dirt and previous dressings before applying UP. So GCTD will prevent UP from bonding and others have also experienced some streaking and uneven appearance issues when using this combo.

I find UP to be a brilliant product but I'm using it on relatively new, un-faded surfaces. I have heard of some others having issues with it when trying to bring back very faded surfaces.

...Although I do recall a thread by Michael Stoops with before/after pics of a faded Jeep exterior trim which turned out great!

As with any product, not every application is going to be a perfect match for it. But UP seems to work best with neglected finishes, or finishes that are regularly washed with the rest of the car but nothing else done to them. If you've been using a solvent based dressing, or anything with some durable polymers in it (like UQW) then UP may experience some bonding issues. But in cases like this Jeep, or the bumpers on our employee's XTerra (after many months!) UP is an awesome product.

The key to application is to use a small amount and work it in very thoroughly. Unlike typical vinyl protectants you shouldn't have to come back later and wipe off any excess. In fact, if you find you have to do that, you're using too much product. It should be completely dry to the touch in a matter of minutes.

The trim on the car was in similar condition to the jeep in the photos. The result the the jeep has with UP is what I got with GCTD. I left the product with the owner to finish at his convenience so I will provide some photos depending on how far he has gotten. Perhaps there might be a way to get similar results with the UP.

Hi guys, well some good news. Originally I complained that UP washes off in the rain well it has been a few weeks now and it has just been raining constantly after ten years of drought but I am amazed to find that my black trim has stayed gloss black even after sitting outside getting soaked. It seems that you need a few applications for it to really work itself in. Once it has done that the trim will remain black and shiney. I should have taken some before and after shots. Worst of all were my mirrors but they are great now. Now all I need is a sunny day to give it one more going over although it will probably be barely noticeable I am a bit of a perfectionist.

The owner of the car washed it so the Gold Class Trim Detailer came off. I have photos of the state of the trim and an effort with Degreaser followed by Ultimate Protectant.

Based on this result will the Ultimate Protectant work with EFFORT or is it a lost cause and either new trim or a painter be required?

Hard to say for sure, but I would try UP another few times. Work it in really well and give it time to soak in each time.

I would by no means think that that was a lost cause.

13 years of drought and now a fabulous wet winter. I havent applied Gold class for a few weeks and my black plastic trim still looks great even after night after night in the rain. I redid it today because it was a bit warmer (15c) and sunny bursts. It definetly requires a few applications but after that it seems to reco the plastic. After todays refreshener it looked a bit glossier but now that it is virtually showroom I cant expect better. I,ve barely used a quarter of the bottle. Now for a garage to put it in!
