Ben, I would suggest you the smooth surface kit from meguiars, get it at Canadian Tire! Its only 29.99 CAD It comes with two sealed clay bars, a quick detailer bottle ( to use as the lubricant, its big enough to do the entire car), a good microfiber towel, and a little bottle of meguiars cleaner wax. I got enough of that bottle to do my whole Chevy Cobalt!
I have used car wash soap at least 80% of all the times I have clayed. I have had clay (used) long term, and the clay suffered no ill effects from the soapy water. I store it dry.
I buy a Riccardo clay bar and a friend say to me I can use car soap in a spray bottle to use the clay, but do you think is soap car as a bad effect to the claybar??
There are claybars that you can use it with simply water, but meguiars claybar works the best with a lubricant. Chinese claybars may be used with water only.
And get the right aggression of the clay you maybe just need a mild clay not an aggressive one.

Riccardo's clay, or any other clay's out there, will work perfectly fine with water and a little bit of car shampoo. I've used it before in the past and stored the clay away for a few months to try other types of clays and there was no deterioration or break down at all. A few small drops of car shampoo is all you need in a bottle of water.
Also Riccardo's clay is a very good clay if not one of the best. You are lucky to live in Canada and to have access to it. I know many people in the US would die to get their hands on some.
