  • Gold Class Carnauba Plus cleaning ability

I read somewhere in this forum, that the new GC has more cleaning ability. Now, I just applied a coat of TechWax 2.0, and I am going to wait at least 12 hours for it to cure. If I apply a coat of Gold Class Carnauba Plus, does it have enough cleaning ability that it will actually remove the TechWax 2.0 below? Thanks!

"Officially" both GC and NXT are listed by Meguiars as polish/waxes, not cleaner/wax. That said, meguiars has said that NXT has some very mild cleaner in, *probably* just enough to remove old wax as a new coat goes on. The GC product description says "removes fine swirls" which I DONT believe - if it had said "hides fine swirls" I would believe it (due to its polish content).

Since both GC and NXT are listed as polish/wax and *NOT* pure wax, I would suspect they both contain a very mild cleaner to remove old wax and hence allow the polish to be effective, but NOT a real cleaner that can practically remove swirls or other minor defects (hide them YES, but NOT remove them).

This is one of the problems with Meguiars product descriptions, they are always very vague and just talk about general goodness like "gloss", "vibrant color", "deep reflections", "brilliant shine" etc. But, end-consumers cannot really tell from the descriptions if it is a WAX, or WAX/POLISH, or WAX/POLISH/CLEANER etc. Most end-customers reading the description for ColorX vs GC would not really be able to tell the difference between the products.

If you want to carnuba wax on top of NXT, then DC3 or #26 are your best choices since they are PURE wax (no cleaners).

All the above is my personal opinion, and Meguiars might disagree.

I do not think that there are enough cleaners to remove old wax in GC or NXT because if there were then there would be no logic to applying a second layer. Thw two thin layers are recommended because the first layer covers most and then the second layer ensures that everything is covered and covered equally. I actually used GC today on a section fo my car I used SwirlX and it hid the very faint swirls remaining.

Anyway, I would air more on the side with what Searle has said because he does have much much more detailing experience than me but this was my understanding of both waxes.

As you say, the stated logic behind 2 coats is to ensure that everything is covered, with no missed spots. 2nd coat may remove 1st coat where present, but of course that still means the 2nd coat is there. where 1st coat was missed, the 2nd coat will cover. No layering (additional thickness) happens with any wax, so whether the 1st coat is removed/replaced with 2nd coat, or whether 2nd coat is just excess that is removed, no one really knows for sure.

Many folks (me included) like to top NXT with a PURE carnuba wax (no cleaners to minimize removal of NXT). How much NXT and how much carnuba is in the final result (70 NXT?, 30 Carnuba?) is unknown, but the belief is that much of the cured/bonded NXT remains (because no cleaners in a pure wax) but a little of the NXT top is removed/replaced with similar amount of carnuba. Perhaps almost no carnuba is added, perhaps much of the NXT is removed, no one knows for sure (that would be a horrendously complicated chemical test to perform and undoubtedly very expensive). But the perception by many folks is that this works well (ie pure carnuba wax on NXT), adding some of the warmth/deepth of carnuba while retaining the glossy shine and durability of sealant. But, it may all just be perception.

Please forgive me, coopers23, for picking you up on this small point...as I'm not just anal in detailing but anal in grammar.

I've seen it several times on this forum and others, and I can't contain myself anymore. You just happen to be the one I broke-down on!

            Here it is:
It's not spelled 'air', it's spelt 'err'. There I've said it!

            I feel better now.

Yes, thank you. I know that err is the proper spelling but I was in a hurry at the time and decided to err on the side of brevity for I needed to depart.
