  • I'm a convert!!

I've used Meguiars products in the past but for the past several years I've been a loyal Mothers user....until now. I started getting my Firebird ready for the car show season last weekend and after reading about the latest offerings from Meguiars I thought I'd give the Ultimate Compound,SwirlX, and my old favorite Deep Crystal Step 1 (aka Body Scrub, telling my age) a try. The DC1 performed as expected, the SwirlX didn't work as anticipated, might have been my technique. The UC made it possible to remove some very fine scratches and swirls. In addition, a fellow club member recommended trying Hot Rims Aluminum polish on my wheels instead of the Mothers and all I can say is WOW!!! they look better now than when they were new and took care of some trouble spots that Mothers never worked on. After all this Meguiars success I decided to perform a little test. I applied a small area of the B pillar with a coat of California Gold carnauba wax and viewed the results in the sun.....nice but still seeing room for improvement. I then applied a same size area with NXT Generation from an old bottle I've had on the shelf for some time and was shocked by the difference. It truly lived up to the deeper, darker, etc. on the label and virtually all swirls and such defects disappeared. Needless to say the bulk of the Mothers inventory is being reassigned to taking up shelf space while I restock my arsenal with Meguiars products. Many thanks for making some great products.

Join the cult! But don't drink the Kool-aid lol. Glad to hear you have found the car care secret. My mom used to work for an automotive warehouse, as thier accountant, and as soon as I tried some Meguiars stuff I ran out to Wal-mart and bought up everything megs!

One concern I have, especially in regards to using the SwirlX is the use of "passion" behind the pad. Where at on a scale of just smearing it on to trying to rub through the hood does this level of passion fall? My paint is in very good shape and it's not like I'm trying to remove years of abuse and neglect. Can someone post some pics of what each step from first application to final wax after the product is removed is supposed to look like? I think I'm misleading myself in comparing what the surface looks like after each product is removed to others "after" shots, which include the final wax that I have not applied yet and that has me worried I may be doing more harm than good.

You could watch the video on the main page from webridestv.com, and there Mike is using Ultimate Compound gently by hand. You would use SwirlX in a similar fashion.

After clay and SwirlX, the paint should look pretty close to the final result. A pure polish and wax will just add a litle extra glow.

                Re: I'm a convert!!

The level of passion required with any product depends not only on how severe the defects are but how hard the paint is, too. Even very fine defects on extremely hard paint will take very vigorous rubbing to remove, but without worry of going through the paint. Typical swirls are so shallow that regardless how hard you work a product, if you aren't removing the swirls you are not removing enough paint to be concerned at all.

Keep in mind that the act of removing swirls, not just hiding them but actually removing them, requires the removal of some paint and that is not going to happen by merely wiping a product on and wiping it off right away. Scary as this concept of paint removal is, that's what you're doing when you remove swirl marks, towel marks, rotary holograms, etchings from bird droppings, fine scratches, and even oxidation. But the amount you're removing, especially when working by hand or D/A (assuming you're not doing something totally off the wall with the D/A!) is incredibly small. In fact, to a large degree all you're doing is rounding off the very sharp corners of the edges of those swirl marks which are, in reality, just very fine scratches.

Look through several of the threads in our Pictures from Saturday Classes area and you'll see many different vehicles, almost always black, showing before/after areas corrected using Ultimate Compound. We do an area by hand and an area via G110v2 right next to it. The hand applied area usually reveals a correction level approaching 90% but the machine applied area is usually almost perfect.

Now that I have an idea of what I'm looking for I'll be laying the first coat of NXT 2.0 on this weekend and see how it turns out.
