NXT Gen Tech Wax 2.0/Gold Class Liq Wax question...

Hey,

I'm new to this whole detail thing and I just recently learned that a sealant is different then a wax. I thought they were the same thing...

Anyways, on the FAQ page of Meguiars.com, I read that NXT Gen Tech Wax 2.0 is a sealant. (link: http://www.meguiars.com/Faq/index.cf...&section=_6#_6 )

So my question is, can I first apply NXT Gen first as a sealant, then apply Gold Class Liq Wax as the wax application? Or would I do the opposite, first Gold Class then NXT Gen? Will that help any or would I be wasting my time? I already have the Gold Class Liq Wax and am looking for a good sealant to apply first.

Orrr...am I way out of my league here and asking something ridiculous..? lol

You could do that, but there would not be too much point. Both products are meant to be the last layer on top of the paint so it is typically one or the other.

Some people do two coats of their top layer (nxt or gold class for example) to ensure even coverage.

Oh ok, well then what would be a good sealant to apply? Preferably something that lasts a few months and (most importantly) easy to apply by hand!! lol

Nxt 2.0 is the best protecting wax Meguiars makes. Some people still like to top it, and you could use Gold Class, but covering up the phydrophobic polymers in the Nxt seems like you are covering up one of the best properties it has.

^^Yea, that's true.

Would the #20 mirror glaze pro polymer sealant work well with gold class liquid wax on top?

Since I already have the gold class liquid, might as well use it up first before moving on and buying the NXT Tech Wax. Also, once I buy the NXT Tech, can I still use the polymer sealant?

Any of the waxes will work together, thats not a problem.

#20 has some cleaning properties as well, like a real mild cleaner/wax.

Depending on what you current process looks like, using a cleaner/wax (#20, ColorX etc), and topping it with a regular wax is a fine option.

Wait, I thought ColorX was a cleaner/polish..? I was planning on using ColorX (or Swirl Remover 2.0) after washing then sealant then wax.

I don't have a "current process" as I've never used a cleaner, polish, sealant, or wax before.. lol I've just recently started hand-washing my car! haha I'm currently in the process of making a detailing process for myself!

I've yet to try it, so take it for what it's worth, but most people when they top do it the style you do. A sealant then a caranuba for added pop.

Ok, so today I bought some microfiber application pads from Wal-Mart, will that work to apply any of the above, mainly the ColorX (which I also bought today)?

It's been raining here a lot recently and I think we'll get a few days of sunshine into early next week so I figured I'd wash and do one application of ColorX (since it's an all-in-one...?) Once application of that should do me well to clean the paint a bit, polish, and protect it, right? I plan on following that up with Meg Quick Wax. It's just temporary until I buy the rest of the supplies (ie. MF application pads, #21, #9...) and re-detail with sealant and wax.

Also, I think I have some swirls, so I'd have to apply the ColorX with some pressure, or 'passion' as it's called on this form. lol If I do that, will I still be getting the same protection even though I'm working it in, or should I re-apply another coat?

Yes, MF can be used. I like just the smooth foam, but give it a shot and see if you like it. Just a personal preference is all. As a side note, terry cloth will be more aggressive than the MF/Smooth foam.

I really like the Ultimate Quick Wax as my spray wax. Just doing a coat of ColorX to get by for the moment will be ok. Nothing wrong with that, and a spray wax cant hurt. Or throw your Gold Class over it for a good coat of wax.

As far as swirls, ColorX wouldn't necessarily be the best product to pick, but you can certainly try it. It sounds like you will be building up your collection slowly, so you can certainly do a detail with clay, and a stronger product like SwirlX if needed, etc in the future.

Just let the ColorX dry like a wax after applying if you want the protection. Also, while you are supposed to apply waxes thin, if you are going to be working the product in, you may need a little extra to have something to work in.

Incidentally, I see #9 on your list.... what all are you looking at and planning? Just wondering if you are a little all over the place, after the multiple cleaner/waxes.

I'm not quite sure what I want exactly, I've never been interested in detailing until I got my new car. I want to keep it in tip-top shape as best I can without being overly obsessive about it. lol I mean, nothing wrong with that, I just don't have time for it right now.

Up until a few days ago, I had no idea about "swirl marks". I knew about scratches cuz obviously I can see them, but this swirl thing got me agitated cuz my entire car has swirl marks! I had no idea there were so many "techniques" for car washing, polishing, waxing, etc! I've been EXTREMELY ignorant about car care up until now, but better late then never, right?

Anyways, I want to make an effort to make my car as clean/shiny looking as possible with few to no defects. So here I am looking for as much information and product reviews as I can. I don't want to cut corners, but then again, I can't spend an entire day working on my car, hence looking for several duals (ie. cleaner/polish, cleaner/wax) so I can do 2 steps in one. I'm set on car wash shampoo, wax, quick detailer spray, and quick wax spray. I'm now looking for a good cleaner, polish, and sealant -- preferably products that can handle broad defects so that I don't have to buy several products for individual problems. I have a lot of swirls and a few light scratches here and there. I don't know how to tell if the swirls are light or deep though, and I don't know what holograms are.

I bought the ColorX because I've read a lot of good reviews about it. Plus I've read that it's an AIO and it handles light scratches/swirls pretty well leaving the car shiny and protected. So on days when I can't individually apply the cleaner, polish, or wax, I can use that to cover all the basis. Plus adding a coat of quick wax to top it off.

As for some products, here's a short list of what I'm thinking about buying:
Wash - covered
Clay - Smooth Surface Clay Kit
Cleaner - #9 (cleaner/polish)
Polish - #9, maybe #5 or #7 later on
Sealant - either NXT Tech Wax 2.0 or #21
Wax - covered

I will be applying everything by hand for the time being, if I do a lot of detailing in the months to come, I'll consider saving up and buying a DA or something. I have an interest in this, not as a career, but a hobby for sure. If I get good at it, I would definitely consider this a side job or something.

ColorX is definately a good product to have around.

If you have the time to squeeze in Wash, Clay if needed, ColorX, and Wax, that is a pretty solid detail.

For a more full detail, and tackling more of the swirls, you might want:
1. Wash
2. Clay
3. Clean - SwirlX is the milder cleaner to try first. Ultimate Compound or #105 would be the stronger cleaner if needed.
4. Polish - Optional, since SwirlX is a cleaner/polish. But #7 would be the top of the line.
5. Wax - Nxt/#21 2.0, etc...
6. Wax - More Nxt, Gold Class, whatever you like.

On another note... removing swirls by hand *****. So if you have to get after them with SwirlX/UC, be prepared for slow going.

You may find it beneficial to focus on a panel or two a day kind of thing. Dont try to over do it.

Yea, I've seen SwirlX, but how well does that work on light scratches? (if at all) But then again, I guess there's always ScratchX 2.0, too. The only thing that bothers me about ScratchX 2.0 is that you don't get as much as some of these other products for a similar price.

And just out of curiosity, what would #9 be used for? That's also stated to be a cleaner/polish. Is that only applied via DA cuz it's in the professional line or can it be applied well via hand too? I kind of like the deep gloss aspect of it! lol
