Re: Rubbing Compound & Polishing Compound

I think some of the reason for these 2 new products (I could be wrong) is the fact that most of the average consumers that walk into a parts store looking for something to restore the finish on their paint will not know what Ultimate Compound is because not everyone stays up on all the new product offerings like we all do and understands what all the various products can do and in the end they would end up being more likely to pass on the Ultimate Compound and purchase a competitors rubbing or polishing compound just because those terms are more familiar to them because they have been around for a long time.

So I think Meguiars came out with these 2 new products because they would be more familiar to the average consumer and of course because they are cheaper than say Ultimate Compound.

That's what I think, but like I said, I could be wrong.

      It's called marketing guys.
Those of us on this forum represent a very small percentage of overall Meguiars sales. These products are not for "us".

Meguiars should feel flattered that every time a new products is released, we find a reason to buy it and add it to our arsenal of detailing products.

I said a while ago what a mistake it was to drop DC-1 since it was a "low level" cleaning agent for your average consumer (the majority of their customers). Now with these new products, they re-capture that group.
Most people who will buy these refer to "waxing" as that step you do once a year to protect and clean the paint.

These products are targeted at people who will visit their local shop to buy Turtle Wax rubbing compound. For us, the enthusiasts, we'll still be happiest with Ultimate Compound and SwirlX (two fantastic products.)

          Rubbing compound?

Sounds like a young man's product.

Not sure if the ole arm can handle going back to hand rubbing.

Still, I might use it as a super duty version of ScratchX.

Would these perhaps be better to use for spot removal or scratches? Or if I already have M105 is it a waste?

No, not at all. Read hacker-pschorr's post just a couple of posts above this one - he nails it totally.

This is beyond ironic because Barry meguiar always said how polishing and rubbing compounds never work

                  Technology advances.

A powerful compound shouldn't finish out real nice when used with a wool pad and a rotary buffer, but now M105 does.

Wash & Wax products never really did much because the soluble wax would just rinse off with the soap, but Ultimate Wash & Wax uses a dispersed wax that actually does stick around after rinsing.

Old school rubbing compounds used to be sort of like sand in a paste and would heavily haze the paint, but Meguiar's new Clear Coat Safe Rubbing Compound uses more advanced abrasives that won't do that.

"Innovate or die" as the saying goes.

Mike, what about aggressiveness and where this would fit into the consumer line with products like Ultimate Compound oraz SwirlX ?
Do You find something out in this issue ?

The Clear Coat Safe Rubbing Compound is roughly equal to Ultimate Compound in cutting ability, while the Polishing Compound is in between SwirlX and ScratchX 2.0 - that's a pretty fine distinction though!

Remember, too, that this pair of products is designed for hand use only. A lot of you like to experiment with products using application methods other than the recommended, but in this case, trust us, you want to stick to hand application only.

I am a "hand only" person. No machines - not a philosophy but driven by fear of ruining my paint. If I have to do it 5 times, that's ok, I can see where I am going.. also good cardio workout - lol! I look forward to using product that is centered around the hand polisher! Good move, Meguire's!

Re: Rubbing Compound & Polishing Compound

Just tried Meguiar's new Clear Coat Safe Rubbing Compound on my wife's Subaru. After reading this thread, I am thinking I fall into the category of "average" / "uneducated" consumer, as I know very little about detailing. I picked this up because I had a coupon and assumed a two-step product would work better than a single-step product like SwirlX. Anyway, I was impressed. I'll let the pictures tell the rest of the story.

Here are the products I used:

                          Step one, wash.
                          Step two, dry.
Step three, mask off the fenders and grill (I only did the hood to start with).
Step four, wipe down the hood with some diluted rubbing alcohol to remove any remaining wax and dirt.
Step five, apply Rubbing Compound one small section at at a time. Do not allow to dry and wipe off immediately.
Step six, wipe the hood down one more time with a clean terry cloth towel.
Step seven, apply Clear Coat Safe Polishing Compound. As before, apply to one small section at at a time. Do not allow to dry and wipe off immediately.
Step eight, give the hood another thorough wipe-down with a clean terry cloth towel.
                          Step nine, wax.

                              Trust me.

If you ever buff a car with a DA polisher, you'll never look back.
