  • First Experience with U.C. and UQW - Good

So today is the first time I've actually busted out the Ultimate Compound and Ultimate Quik Wax. I am very impressed.

I had some dated water spots on the front and back bumper areas of my car that SwirlX couldn't do much for. I remember Mike Phillips saying that you can go directly to U.C. and just stop as soon as the problem is fixed since it doesn't have diminishing abrasives that need to be worked in for a certain period of time.

My car was already washed so I applied some Last Touch to get rid of surface dirt and then I attacked those water spots. That was probably one of the best paint cleaning experiences I've ever had as the water spots were gone in no time and the paint looked great. Finally, I sprayed Last Touch to remove any residue and then applied Ultimate Quik Wax. It was also my first time applying UQW. I was also impressed with UQW and it meets my needs exactly - I am a busier guy now than before so if I do a small amount of paint cleaning, I want to be able to apply a protectant without busting out the main wax. UQW fits the bill perfectly and left the bumpers looking great. This is why I love Meguiars!

One question I have concerning U.C. is for small simple jobs like removing water spots by hand, how many times could I repeat that process on a specific area before I remove all of the clearcoat? I ask because my car has several areas that tend to get water spots due to how it is built and I'd like to U.C. these areas maybe every 6 months or every year. Would I find myself through the clear in just a few years or is a couple passes by hand not likely to remove it any time soon? Thanks.

You mention formation of water spots due to how the car is built - are you referring to areas that tend to slowly drip water out after washing? Those annoying little places that you think you've gotten only to discover the next day that they were holding back on you? If so, keeping a good coat of wax on the car should make it possible for you to just wipe those away a day or two later with some quick detail spray and a microfiber. For those kind of water spots you should not need Ultimate Compound at all.

Many of our Thursday Night Open Garage regulars have this same experience and find the above process corrects the situation pretty quickly. The trick is to double check these known areas just a day or two after washing. You know where these areas are so, even though you're busy, it's just a matter of maybe two minutes to fix.

Thanks Mike. That's exactly what I was talking about. Now that I've cleared the old spots away, I'll give this a shot. I'll just Last Touch the area after a couple days. I used to do this but I used to wash my car like once a week so somewhere in there I just got lazy and stopped doing it apparently. I think part of it too was that on my car, the area is kind of stubborn - it's the trunk/bumper groove so I have to open the trunk up and really get in there. But opening the trunk takes 2 seconds so it shouldn't be a big deal.

This might sound a bit crazy but it works great:

For those stubborn areas that seem to hold water forever, use a wet/dry shop vac to pull it out. Many people like using a leaf blower but with the very hard water we have here in SoCal that process just seems to leave little tracers of spots all over the car. If you have a wet/dry shop vac, give it try - it works great!

If you have access to a small air compressor. Just put a straight air handle on the end of the hose and blow out these areas as you are drying the vehicle, I have found that it works great for myself as in the past I have had the exact same problem !!!! Now that I have been BLOWING OUT the areas I no longer have the water spots later!!!!!!!!
