  • Will Meguiar's Ultimate Compound do this...?

Hey guys, im not a detailer, but after surfing around on some detailing forums im completely jealous of what can be done by someone who knows what they're doing. So ive decided to at least try and put my foot into the door of the world that is detailing...

Ive also decided to try to see if I can do my own paintwork recently. Ive been throwing some light coats of black paint onto a practice hood in my garage. Its single stage paint. Ive done 3-4 coats now sanding with 800, 1000 and now 1500 tonite in between coats.

After putting a new coat of paint over the sanded 1500 tomorrow morning, i plan on wetsanding it with 2000 tomorrow nite.

Im looking for a 'consumer product' that will take me from 2000 grit sanded single stage paint to shiny. Im pretty broke these days from college and cant afford 4-5 different pads and polishing compounds so ive been looking for one single product that can do what I want.

I was suggested to check out Ultimate Compound as it might be able to do what im trying to do...does anyone know if this product will be able to do this? Thanks for any information you can send my way.

Oh and I have a rotary buffer/polisher with a wool and foam pad. Not quite sure what brand pads, but i was planning on using the same product with the wool and the foam pad, if possible.

    Hi Alex,

To begin with welcome to MOL

As far as using Ultimate Compound to pull sanding marks, that may be a tough challenge since it was not designed for that. In some cases maybe, in others not at all.

Depending on what you consider a "consumer" product, we would have you jump to M105. Since you are working by hand, you may want to refine the marks again by going to 3000 grit. You will have a much easier time by hand removing those.

In addition, M105 can be applied by a rotary buffer where as Ultimate Compound can't...

And you can pick up a 12 oz. bottle of M105 from Auto Detailing Solutions for $9.99.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I had been looking at the m105 but after looking around, it was a little too rich for my blood. That 10 dollar sampler thing looks like it might be worth trying out once that website opens back up.

Oh, and also, I was wondering why is it not recommended that you use UC with a rotary? Is it something having to do with the ingredients used to make it, or is it because its aimed towards the regular consumer and Meguiars doesnt want people messing up their stuff and blaming it on the product rather than their lack of tool knowledge?

In any matter, I ended up giving the UC a try tonite with my harbor freight rotary and started with the harbor freight brand foam pad that came with it...didnt even bother with the wool one because it was some lame tie-on kind that got unbalanced very quickly.

Holey moley...I cant believe it. I figured there would be no WAY you can get paint shiny after being wetsanded with 2000 grit. I cant believe it. And on top of it, the practice hood im working on is painted with black gloss rustoleum!

Im still going to pick that sampler size 105 up...but wow. I figure ill get a wool pad and give it a shot starting with the 105. I cant wait to see what UC can do on my GTI that has minor swirls.

I have a faded blue Chevy pick up to do tomorrow. The truck is in very bad shape and I told the owner Ill do the best I can. I have UC and I plan on trying it with a rotary and wool pad . We will see if it will work , or why it wont work. I will follow with 80, wool pad and then 80 with black 3m foam pad. I will finish by hand with NXT 2 or 26 , I havent deceided yet. I wish I had pictures . I dont own a camera and I wouldnt know how to post it on a computer anyway. I did try UC and 80 by hand on the hood and it looked like it will come out good.

Im guessing the reason its not suggested for use with a rotary is to save people with no rotary knowledge from ruining something. Goodluck on the truck.
