  • Tech Protectant

Over the weekend I picked up my 57 T-bird which I just finished a 2 year concourse restoration on. First, I applied and removed tech wax. I then applied to the entire car what I thought was spray wax. Unfortunatley, I had applied tech protectant instead. I wiped it off and then applied spray wax. Final outcome is ok, but not spectacular.

The finish was buffed and polished when painted 3 months ago. Also, one coat of wax was installed. Have I hurt the finish? What should I do?

Car is a red trailer queen used for shows only. Stored in A/c garage when not being shown.

Note to Mequiars: Please change color of Tech Protectant. Absent minded people such as myself may have problems with this.

    Thanks

    Hi carguy,

    Welcome to Meguiar's Online!

I'll pass your suggestion on to Marketing, I've heard of this happening before, (accidentally mistaking Tech Protectant for Spray Wax and spraying Tech Protectant onto your car's finish).

I don't think the Tech Protectant will harm your finish, especially since it sounds like you removed it right away.

If you want to be sure that you have completely removed it, you could apply a mild paint cleaner to the entire finish and then re-apply the Tech Wax. I would recommend the Deep Crystal Paint Cleaner because it is a very mild paint cleaner that relies on chemical cleaning action with no mechanical abrasives at all.

Also, in most cases, for maximum results, apply two thin coats of the Tech Wax, there is no need to apply the Spray Wax immediately afterwards.

FWIW, auto zone employees around here don't pay attention and mix up both spray wax and tech. protectant on the shelfs. the bottles being the same is ok, maybe just alittle difference on the label to make the difference stick out alittle more.

I've actually heard of this happening to quite a few people now. Maybe a change to the bottle is needed....

After nearly doing the same thing on two occasions I took the matter into my own hands and marked up the bottles with a permanent marker. I would also encourage Meguiar's to change the colors of these spray bottles.

I did it too! It was late and starting to get dark , I was rushing to get done for a show first thing the next morning and I sprayed the NXT Booster Wax on my tires instead of the NXT Protectant.

maybe switch the head and the bottle colors between the two.

You have to be very careful at the stores. I think either people switch them or the not so careful employees just throw it on the shelf. I hope that they really consider changing the color on the bottles.

                  Did I miss something?

I though the tech wax was in a flip cap squeeze bottle and the booster wax was in a trigger spray bottle?

The NXT TEch Booster Spray Wax and the NXT Tech Protectant look very much the same.

I just hate when I sleep through something.

                      I sit corrected.
