I know people have sanded and then used PlastX. But again that only lasted a few months.

I'm having difficulty getting my mind around this. Do you think that PlastX is leaving behind fillers and that is why it only lasts a few months?

My thinking is that if you did one headlight with the sanding product and the other with PlastX they would both stay clear the same length of time because they are both removing plastic to obtain the results.

What are your thoughts.

I'm a bit confused by the pictures. Are you saying that the headlight on the right was like the headlight on the left, you corrected it and it has stayed the same for 2 years?

That's kinda my thinking. I know PlastX is a compound like a lot of the other products, but it is different than the pure sanding process. I'm not sure if that's the difference or not. Both remove material, but one is exclusively doing just that.

The six month time figures came from posts on a different headlight assembly on altimas.net. Plastics are all different, so that's one factor to account in the equation.

I have cloudy headlights on my newly acquired 1995 Nissan Altima. What I will do is use the Headlight kit on one side and the other kit on the other side. After a few months/years, I can post back here with the results. That will be the best evaluation.

Do you know if I can use this product in the instrument cluster, the clear plastic is foggy, seems that the previous owner used some chemicals to clean it.
I understand that i need to remove the cluster first, but that's not a problem.

It should.

One time at a Meguiar's booth a gentleman brought us the plastic face over the gauges out of a 60's era muscle car, don't remember exactly but it may have been a GTO. The plastic was all scratched up in circles, it looked like someone had used your basic red shop rag to wipe the gauges by rubbing it in a circle inside the enclosure.

We placed the plastic flat on a towel and machine buffed it using a rotary buffer with a W-5500 foam polishing pad and some M01 Medium Cut Cleaner and it removed the scratches and restored clarity to the plastic. We then turned it over and buffed the other side and after wiping the residue of handed it back to the happy owner.

That was at least 20 years ago. Point being, if we've done it in the past we can probably due it today.

Fast forward to the present and we now have a much better product for polishing on plastic and that's PlastX. (PlastX is in the kit)

If it were mine, I would test PlastX out on a small section by hand using a clean foam applicator pad like the ones below and see if it's working on your specific type of plastic.

If you can make one small area look good or at least improve it then chances are good that if you do all the work required to remove it from the dash that you'll be able to remove the scratches and restore clarity both by hand and with the buffing pad included in our new Headlight & Clear Plastic Restoration Kit.


It's always good to proceed with caution if you're working on something you've never worked on before by doing a test spot, even a little on. There's lots of different types of plastics on the market and it's an evolving technology, so it's a good idea to test first.

Few questions:

Mike I know that you posted about using standard corded/cordless drill which can go up to 4000 rpms in some models
but what do you think is ideal rpms using corded drill with this proprietary drill mounted polishing pad & PlastX?

Also how many pounds of pressure should be used with this pad?

How many times we should be able to use this polishing pad, I know some will probably say it depends on condition of your headlight(s), but what do you think is average time?


Anyone tried this headlight kit (I did as well but still looking to get best out of it) and competitor's products such as 3M Headlight Restoration or LC's 4" pads with PlastX that can say what works better/faster?

Just picked this kit up yesterday at Pep Boys. I looking for both PlastX and a drill-mounted buffing wheel, and when I saw that this kit had them both, I figured what the heck?

Seems like a good combo. I *just* wet sanded/polished some lights out before I bought this kit, so I couldn't give it a proper workout. I did, though, go over them again with this, and they were definitely smoother. I also used the kit on a bug deflector--cleaned it up very nicely. Like many of Meg's consumer line products, I think that the HRK is a *bit* overpriced, but it's a good pick up. Good job Meg's.

Hi,I bought PlastX and it has filled an area which I never really tackled before.This stuff is excellent.I use it on so many things.I just love it's versatility.

The ones we get here in europe are in white bottles.Going by the above photos,is it just a black bottle in the kit?

I think the reason there are some conflicting write ups about plastX,is because there are different ways and means to work with it.

When I started on my Instrument cluster(which was quite badly scuffed),I used the foam applicator.This gave a good bite to get rid of the heavy markings.That obviously left some ultra fine scratches of its own.So I changed to a terry and added a little more product and applied a much softer pressure,just gently rubbing(opposite from using the applicator) and not allowing the product to dry and get sticky somewhat.I repeated a few times untill they were gone and it turned out fine.

If you mean the flexible clear plastic window?

The "Yes" PlastX works great for remove scratches and the whitish, foggy, and sometimes even yellow oxidation that builds up on this type of plastic.

Use a clean soft foam applicator pad and maybe tape off any convertible top material next to the plastic so you don't stain it as some convertible tops have a textured weave and it can be hard to get dried residue out of the weave.
