  • NXT question: Multiple coats and durability

The last time I detailed my car I used one coat of NXT 2.0 followed by one coat of GC, waiting between 12 and 24 (I think about 15) hours between coats. It looked great and I really think the GC made the paint look and feel a lot smoother than the NXT alone. As winter approaches I'm hoping to apply two coats of NXT followed by one coat of GC. When it gets warmer, I will probably not use NXT at all for this particular car but I appreciate its durability for the cold season. So I have two questions.

    1. Can the paint withstand two coats of NXT and one of GC or is that going to be superfluous? How much durability will be added by the extra coat of NXT?

    2. I know that everyone says two layers is just for even coverage. But why then do you have to wait 12 to 24 hours for a coat to cure? I would think if it was just for even coverage then you could apply it immediately after.

Thanks in advance for the help.

I do not see anything wrong with 2 coats of NXT topped with GC. No harm will come to the car. Not sure how much longer the durability will be. I only use 1 coat of NXT and get around 3 months.
People wait the 12hrs so the sealant can cure. Call it what you want when you wait the curing time you are adding a second coat. Once again I do not see any wrong in doin this.

I have done this. They say you shouldn't really notice anything, but I like the way it looks afterward myself. If you have the time and you enjoy doing it, give it a try to see how you like it. That's just my opinion though.

At some point you reach "The point of diminishing returns", there's an article on layering in that discusses this at length and no one has ever presented a case for the opposite.

If the polymers or other protection ingredients have not fully set-up then applying a product over them tend to disrupt them, or move them around again...

It's best not to try to over-complicate something that is very simple. I've been posting to detailing information to the Internet since 1994 and seen people discuss topics to absolute death, but at the end of the day, you're going to either wax the car or not...

After preparing the car for a coat of wax or a paint sealant, (whatever you want to call them, the thing that you apply to "protect the paint"), apply one or two coats, (your option), and either stand back and enjoy the results or go drive the car.

You can make it more complicated than this by reading more and more opinions or dissecting everything to the molecular level, but after all is said and done, you're still going to either wax the car or not... that is... push away from the keyboard and move to the garage and have some fun and then hopefully enjoy the results if everything was done properly.

Thanks for the responses, guys. Last time I topped with Gold class, I did notice a small difference (Black Cherry Miata) in the look and feel of the paint, but that was also not with two coats of NXT but one. So I will definitely give the second coat about 20 hours to setup, maybe even UQD it before decide whether or not to apply the Gold Class. If everything goes well with the complete detail (my first on this car) I will post pics in the Show Off Your Work section.
