  • Really bad hazing after using PlastX

I have posted this on some other forums and I thought I would also post it here:

I tried to remove some of the small scratches on my gauge cluster using Meguiars PlastX and it left some really bad hazing. I called the Meguiars hotline and they recommended using another microfiber cloth. When that didn't remove the hazing, I called again and they told me to use a foam applicator. That didn't work either. The haze seems to be inside the plastic and it wasn't there before. As I continue to buff to try to remove the haze and residue, I get lots of swirling.

Any suggestions would really be appreciated. I don't know what I am doing wrong. I have followed the instructions on the bottle and I don't understand why this is happening. The microfiber towel used to buff out the PlastX is a Supreme Shine Meguiars towel.

I think I remember plastX being difficult to wipe off. Try using some QD and a microfiber to wipe it down.

Took me a bit of work, but I had a lot of success on my dash using PlastX. Unsure whats going wrong here...

Anyone know if ScratchX is more or less aggressive than PlastX? I would give it a shot with some ScratchX and see if that works.

To explain what is happening, the plastic appears to be very soft, and therefor it is scratching too easily.

Either that, or you weren't able to work the polish down properly due most likely to the cramped space.

Have you tried varying how much force you use? ie hard or soft pressure?

Looks like it's not being worked in enough...very difficult on such a cramped object.

Yeah, I had to take my arm off buffing my headlights using PlastX. Your gonna have to use a little more elbow grease!!! That's all.

Hard to say from the pic if that is product smearing or actual swirls? Do they "move around"?

Re: Really bad hazing after using PlastX

One of the things we talk about on this forum is doing test spots, that is testing a product and process to a small area first to make sure the product, you application process and your skills and abilities are going to be able to produce the results you're looking for and if not, then luckily you've only worked on a small spot.

With small components, like the plastic cover on a gauge, this can be hard because it's small and awkward to work on, but the idea still applies.

Some plastics are pretty hard, like Lexan and don't like to be abraded or polished with anything, some plastics have coatings and if you use anything on them you'll remove or damage the coating.

PlastX is a great product and zillions of people have great luck with it, but again, not all plastics lend themselves well to being worked on with the end-result being the component looks original or good.

I'll shoot an e-mail to Tom MacDonald and ask him to read your post as he's had some experience with issues like this in the past and may have some insight.

Here's a couple of things I can think of...

First, pressure is important, if you push too hard your finger pressure pushing against your application material can cause scratching, so you have to have balance between too little and too much pressure.

Application material is also important, high quality microfiber applicator pads are usually safe to use, clean soft foam is also a time-proven application material.

Of course, working clean is also the first factor to insure and that is wiping the surface clean of any dirt, dust or other contaminants before applying and working any product on any surface.

And again, some plastics don't lend themselves well to being abraded, cleaned or polished in any way, shape or form, and if that's the case then it won't matter whose product you use, it just isn't going to work.

Besides PlastX you might try one of these,

              M1708 Plastic Cleaner
              M1008 Plastic Polish

Will send Tom an e-mail now...

M1008 Plastic Polish is a great product. PlastX will be more aggressive but M1008 is a great plastic Polish.
