  • Please comment on my routine. newbie here!

Just bought three products: Gold car wash, Color X and Nxt 2.0.

My routine is as follows: Monthly: use Gold car wash, Color X and Nxt 2.0.
Weekly: wash car with Gold car wash.

Is this okay? I read a 5 step cycle but would this routine suffice in terms of maintaining my car's exterior gloss? Or there are a few more that I need? Thanks

From what I know, and I know very little about Color X, both Color X and NXT 2.0 are serving the same purpose, and are thus not necessary together. Proper weekly washing with GC wash and a waxing with NXT every 4-6 weeks should be great maintenance. The main thing is that you have good tools/supplies to do proper maintenance (such as wash mitts, buckets, brushes, wheel cleaners, etc.) and also that you maintain a finish that's already good, not maintain a finish in need of correction.

Nxt has some very mild cleaners in it, not to be confused with an actual cleaning step, or a stong cleaner/wax like ColorX.

It is one of those things, do ColorX and Nxt the first time, then if you are sure your surface is in good shape, could just do Nxt in the future until you feel it needs cleaned. If you are unsure, maybe a daily driver in bad weather, just do the ColorX and Nxt.

And try to find a Smooth Surface Clay kit of course.

For a casual enthusiast, this is fine, a simple routine conducted on a regular basis is far more effective than extreme, high-intensity cleanings/polishings/waxings performend once a year, or every few years.

Even if all you used was Gold Class wash weekly (or as needed) and Color-X monthly/as desired, you can be confident that your car will NEVER need any type of harsh cleaning or polishing because it will always be in good condition.

BUT be very, VERY careful, because once the detailing bug has bitten...it's all over.

You will be hoarding old toothbrushes to help clean those small areas, you will notice that your interior (and exterior) have different types of plastic and rubber parts and get a specific cleaner and protectant for each. Microfiber towels will outnumber all other towels in your household. Waxes, polishes and protectants will start to fill your garage, forcing you to move all those unimportant things, like tools, garden equipment etc outside...oh wait, that's my house...

Re: Please comment on my routine. newbie here!

I think Murr is bang on with the recommendation of clay. I think anyone new at the detailing game has the most to gain from trying clay. I remember when I was 18 and did know all that much about detailing I used to wash weekly (at least) and wax at least every month but often wondered why my daily driver didn't have that silky smooth show car feel.

The ONLY thing that truly gets you to that "feel" is clay and although it might not be the most important step when doing your car as far as looks are concerned, I don't think anything makes it feel so good.

Of course, it is also an essential step in the prep, which is the entire process by which you maximize your work. Also remember that claying is not an everday/week or even month thing. It is an "as needed" activity.

My current car is garage parked get driven about 50 miles a week and therefore has been clayed once (after delivery three months ago) and there is NO need at all for another claying. I don't think it is unheard of for people to only clay two or three times a year.

So, I would give it a shot (at least once). Your car is worth the full five step treatment once and then you can slack... as long as you don't get "detailitis".

BTW, I just finished a full UQD of my ride and I am well pleased right about now!!!

Like Murr1525 touched on, both ColorX and NXT are waxes, one is a strong cleaner/wax and the other is a polish/wax.

Lots of people use ColorX as a cleaner, for example like ScratchX or Deep Crystal Paint Cleaner and that' perfectly fine to do.

You could also return the ColorX and just use a dedicated paint cleaner for the cleaning step like Deep Crystal Paint Cleaner.

The Nxt Spray wax would be fine.

The UQD is also good, but the spray wax would put back a bit more protection.
