  • Is it possible to wax a car too much (n00bified question)?

Sorry if this is a stupid question.

Recently, I've clayed and waxed my car with NXT 2.0 and love the results.

So, how often is too often? I assume it's not a big deal as NXT 2.0 is a synthetic sealant and I'm not "stripping" down anything (like removing scratches).

Is once a week of 2.0 too much?

Not too much, but perhaps un-needed. You might do better buying some Ultimate Quick Detailer or #135 to use after your weekly washes. Then wax maybe once a month, unless you find you need more.

I also have the same question. Some of my family members said that waxing too much can strip off the clear coat. LOL!

Also, I have a 1999 Accord... I washing it once a week, waxed it once a month before. It still had premature clear coat failure. So I was like is it because of me waxing too much???

Still no definite answer here, can anyone else help out?

            This is an excellent answer:

UQD or M135 will do an excellent job of boosting that shine and keeping it at a very high level. While we're more than happy to see you use as much of our products as possible, we're quick to tell you that some things are just overkill.

And Bri, as for premature clear coat failure on your '99 Honda........ well, sometimes there are just problems with certain paint systems and there have actually been situations where car companies (GM with early '90s paint comes to mind) actually paid to repaint cars because their paint was somewhat shy of terrific. Actually, it was horrible.

It's sad that it still happened even if I was taking good care of the paint. This made me think that waxing was bad for cars and I basically walked away from the detailing scene. But the addiction came back and now I'm here at MOL again LOL!

Waxing is never bad because it doesn't have any cleaners or abrasives right?

Our Cleaner Wax certainly does have cleaners in it, and very effective cleaners at that. But that certainly doesn't make it a bad thing at all - not even close. Consider that working this product by hand is much, much less aggressive than machine applying something like M80, and then consider the paint thickness tests Joe at Superior Shine did using a process even more aggressive still (HERE) and you can see where regular use of Cleaner Wax is totally safe. In fact, for those people who want to maintain a very good appearance we often recommend using Cleaner Wax once a year and something like NXT Generation Tech Wax 2.0 or Gold Class Wax the rest of the year. This gives them a good annual cleaning and excellent year 'round protection. Mosca has posted on a similar process (HERE) and has shown it to be very effective. While this isn't a process to produce a show car shine, it's great for folks who just want to keep a daily driver looking great but aren't interested in using a G110 or removing every last defect. Yes, those people do exist!

The car in my avatar is (was) a 2002 Cavalier that I bought new. I am a self-described insane waxer...I have to wax all the time, well, just because.... My primary were Collinite Inulator, NXT 1.0, #16 and #20 with the occasional cleaning with Color-X or A-12 Cleaner wax. Once in a great while #83 DACP/#9 would be used on heavier issues.

The car lasted 4 years and 106,000 miles with no paint-failure issues, certainly all the waxing did no harm. As you can see from this pic, even on the day it went to car heaven, the paint looked GOOD!

i have been wondering this since i decided to get serious about making Ruby look good.
she is a daily driver and i am not scared to drive regardless of weather. i prefer to not drive on gravel roads, but anything else is fair game.

knowing now that i can get and keep her looking good with less concern on clear coat going away helps alot.

                    Thanx Michael!
