  • what kind of clay is in the clay kit??

I had the meguiars clay kit for cleaning my paint surface. It includes some detail spray and a small peice of semi-soft clay. It works great, but i lost my clay bar. Can i just use modeling clay? I don't feel like spending $15 for a bottle of detail spray and a hunk of cheap clay. Thanks!

LOL, modeling clay is not the same clay you use on your car. Besides, if it's "a hunk of cheap clay," then what's the big deal with spending $15 on it?

I was just wondering what kind of clay is used. I have plenty of the quick detail spray. I just don't want to spend $15 for another bottle of detail spray and some clay that is only $2 if i can get the same type elsewhere. I would also like to have a few bars of clay on hand in case i drop it on the ground. Thats just like dropping $10 in the fire if i have to buy another clay kit everytime. I just want to buy a pound of the clay in bulk. Any ideas????

Detailing clay is more of a speciality clay - like a resin (I think...)

You can get some clay from the Pro line that comes with one bar that can be split into three chunks - Mild Clay C2000. However, the price is $30.

I honestly don't know if there is a company that sells just a huge chunk of detailing clay.

Why not get another Clay Kit?

You'll get the clay, that is what you are looking for. You will also get a microfiber (you can never have too many!) and you'll have an extra quik detailer for claying or removing finger prints or even bird droppings

          It's worth it

What ever you end up getting, cut the bar up into a few pieces. They will still be large enough to use and if you drop one you are only out one piece. I always seem to drop my clay.

Ultimately, one of the best buys is the large C-2000 Professional Mild Clay Bar. It is 200g where the kit only comes with two 50g bars.

It’s not clay like they use for ceramics or whatever. It’s only called clay because it feels and acts much like clay does. It’s a synthetic material.

It’s actually the clay itself that’s the expensive part. While you won’t find the exact same clay anywhere else, you can find different clay formulations from other vendors. They are all expensive because the technology is tightly controlled by patent rights and royalty contracts.

Expect to pay about $50 (give or take) if you want a whole pound. If you find a supplier that sells their clay for a little less (you won’t find one that sells for a lot less, the patent owners control the market with an iron fist) it’s a good idea to try it before ordering a huge wad. Some clays don’t work as well as others.

As PorscheGuy997 and roushstage2 pointed out, Meg’s sells the C2000 clay by itself. It’s a little different from the white clay in the kits.

Think of it this way: If you buy another kit, you will will get a quick detailer and you will have that extra so when you run out of the one you currently use (if you use a qd) you don't have to go out and buy another one. You also benefit from getting a free Supreme Shine Microfiber Towel.
