  • Newbie: NXT vs Gold Class please help

    Hi All,

This is my first post - I am from South Africa and recently bought a new Tornado Red Golf 5 GTI.

I want to keep my car looking as shiny and new as possible as well as protect it.

I understand that there are a number of threads regarding the following but need it answered for my piece of mind.

    1) NXT or Gold Class - which is better? I bought Gold Class yesterday but havent used it as yet - now confused whether I should return it and get NXT - the car is red and I want is to look as clean, shiny and new as possible
    2) Will NXT protect as well as Gold Class?
3)I wash once a week. How often should I wax?
    4) Do I need any other products for the body as the car is only about 3 months old?

    Thanks in advance.

Re: Newbie: NXT vs Gold Class please help

    Hi 1flyGTI

    Welcome to Meguiar's Online!

The official reply from Meguiar's to your question is that at this time our best protecting wax is the NXT Tech Wax. Note that the words "best protecting" means that the ingredients in the NXT will do the best at stopping and/or slowing down any harm to the paint itself from the elements that come into contact with the finish that if given the chance to come into direct contact with the paint.

A lot of people think best protecting means longest lasting, or means both longest lasting and best protecting, but those are two different things.

Meguiar's doesn't make any claims as to how long a wax will last because there are too many variables that affect how long a micron thin layer of wax will remain on the surface. Such as how you wash the car, or use the car. For example the wax on a car rarely used and always parked in a garage will last longer than a car driven everyday and washed at tunnel car wash.

    Your questions...

    1) NXT or Gold Class - which is better? I bought Gold Class yesterday but haven't used it as yet - now confused whether I should return it and get NXT - the car is red and I want is to look as clean, shiny and new as possible.

If you can return the Gold Class for the NXT, you will have our best protecting wax. Keeping your car looking like it's brand new all the time will mean washing and waxing it all the time. As soon as you stop maintaining the paint it will go down hill, unless it's never driven. Driving a car means wear & tear on the entire car, tires, engine and yes paint.

    2) Will NXT protect as well as Gold Class?

NXT will protect better than Gold Class

    3) I wash once a week. How often should I wax?

If you use a quality car wash and not a detergent dish soap, then Meguiar's recommends applying wax 3-4 times a year. That's more or less for the average person, you sound like what we call a serious enthusiast. If you want your car to always look like it was just waxed, then just wax it. By this we mean, nothing looks as good as a car that was just waxed, each time you wash the car the washing process will in and of itself remove some of the wax and therefore diminish the protection and the appearance you previously achieved. Thus if you want your car to always look like it was just waxed, then wax it after each wash, or after every other wash. Another option is to learn how to use a spray-on wax. When used correctly this can be much faster and will restore that just waxed look. There are how-to articles we have written on the technique for using spray-on waxes and they can be found in the how to forum in the Information Station.

    4) Do I need any other products for the body as the car is only about 3 months old?

You shouldn't need to clay, but alas, often times even a brand new car is exposed to some kind of contaminant or overspray floating in the air and if it lands on your new car it's not picky, it will stick to whatever it lands on.

After washing the car, feel the paint with your clean hand, if it feels smooth and silky, then you don't need to clay, if you feel little bumps everywhere then you need to clay. It's now how new a car is that matters, it's what's in the air around where the car has been kept.

Here's a thread with suggested products to maintain a car...

Suggested products for taking care of a new car!

And if you haven't found it yet, then check out the threads in the Information Station, there is literally a Cyber Ton of Information already written for your reading pleasure readily available.

        Thanks guys,

Will try out the NXT - bit scared about using clay as it is not commonly used here in SA but will research it and try it out
