  • Rejuvenating #28 All Metal Polish

In my cabinet are two cans of M28 All Metal Polish. One is the correct creamy consistency. The other, never before opened until today, has shrunken down to about 60% of its original size and is very hard, similar to a paste wax.

Anyone know of a way to rejuvenate this hardened product? It's not cement hard, but it doesn't spread well onto an applicator.

If nothing else comes out in discussion, I'm going to give it a couple shots of #34 Final Inspection, then let it sit overnight.

    Thanks, all

Be careful, I had that happen where mine dried out so I sprayed a tiny little bit of water in to it to soften it up some, which it did. But the next time I went to use it I found I have a petri dish of bacteria growing in it.

Over the years I've used my share of All Metal Polish (sold a bunch, too). I've experienced the same problem you are having. Many times the lid became difficult to take off or put back on. It seemed as though some of the solvent or oil would seep into the plastic jar, slightly swelling it.

My guess is that you won't have a lot of luck restoring the original consistency of the polish by adding water (or a water-based liquid). I think the polish is losing solvent or oil (into the plastic), or simply evaporating.

      I could be wrong!

        Thanks, guys.

Yes, I was afraid it was a solvent issue. That jar WAS hard to open, so it sure makes sense.

The stuff never used to sit on my shelf, but I've been out of the business professionally for 5 years, so it gets some shelf time.

A new jar doesn't cost much, but I just hate to waste a (potentially) good product.
