  • disappointed (da foam cutting disc and backing plate)

i've been to the US last month and first thing i did: ordered the new 5" backing plate and all the da foam discs in 5" size.
now, back home, decided to give it a go.

the cutting disc was doing pretty nice correction (on pair wit Ultimate Compound), i was cleaning the disc every panel using a brush and after 5 panels i got this:

i took my chances and gave the polishing and finishing pad a chance using another backing plate - and no problems, did their job flawlessly.
so now, i'm out the backing plate and da cutting disc. mega-pissed

Looks like some serious heat was being generated there! It almost looks as if the hook & loop on the BP did not match that on the disc, which wouldn't (shouldn't) be the case.

Regardless, Meg's customer service will look after you.

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

It really looks like some serious heat was generated on that cutting disc. These were used by the team that buffed out Freedom One and they didn't experience a single failure, and they beat on these things. This is a post in that thread on Freedom One from Greg Nichols, a high end pro detailer who has been part of our Ford/SEMA team and has been detailing at a very high level for many, many years:

We also used these cutting discs extensively on that 1935 Duesenberg a couple of months ago in Texas. We put 120 man hours of work into just the paint on that car, and the DFC5 cutting discs were incredible for the duration.

Something very wrong happened with your DFC5 disc - that you got this sort of failure after just 5 panels, and looking at the extensive damage done to the disc, we really have to think you were being extremely aggressive with the pad. From the look of it, our guess is over use of product that lead to saturation of the pad, extreme pressure that put a lot of stress on the hook & loop, and the combination of product load and pressure generated a ton of heat that ultimate caused the failure. The major heat build up on a DA is where the pad and backing plate come together. This is because the hook & loop (velcro) has some degree of slop to it, and given how any DA tool moves the pad, this becomes a very violent environment. When stressed by too much pressure over time, and saturating the pad only exacerbates the heat build up, the foam can be compromised, the adhesive holding the loop backer to the foam degrades, and things can go wrong in a big way. As you step down to the polishing and finishing pads, you ease up on the pressure and back off on the speed settings, so the overall aggression level drops dramatically. Every single pad manufacturer on the market will see more failures with their cutting pads than any other pad for this very reason. But when used correctly, even the cutting pads will last a very, very long time. That we used a bunch of these on tools as aggressive as the Rupes 21 on an entire Boeing 707 jetliner (including for polishing bare metal!!) without failure is a testament to how tough these thin foam discs are.

In all honesty, this is the first such failure we've seen with any of these discs as they've been getting rave reviews all over the place. Seriously rave reviews. Now, with that said, we do indeed stand behind our products 100%. But we've got a bit of a problem here: you're outside the USA in an area where these discs are not yet available for purchase. Our Customer Care Center doesn't ship outside the US as International claims are handled by our various distributors around the world. But you bought these in the USA and shipped them elsewhere so we're a bit stuck. Now, if you have a friend/relative in the USA who we can deal with for shipping a replacement to so they can forward it on to you, that's great. If not, we've got a bit of a problem here.

Feel free to shoot me an email or private message with a contact name and address in the USA and I'll gladly send out a replacement.

Re: disappointed (da foam cutting disc and backing plate)

thanks for helping me out, as soon as i find someone in the US will PM you with an shipping address. i hope there is no expiration date on this offer.
so from three pads (cutting, polishing and finishing) gone wrong was the cutting one, so was the 5" backing plate.
could i ask both these items being replaced?

now on my working technique. i primed the pad with Ultimate Compound, then used only a tiny bit of product for an area (say half a door), after each such part i tended to clean the pad from product and paint using a brush. i was doing 3 up-down passes for an area, speed 5 and pressing the pad against the paint (as any correction would require), but not that hard so the pad was spinning with no problems whatsoever.
